10 QUESTIONS WITH… Q1

In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month we spoke to Nick Tanti, Managing Director of ABM Technical Solutions.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

My first job was for Matthew Hall Mechanical and Electrical Engineers as an M&E HVAC apprentice. I started on their construction side, before the recession in 1987 and then transferred into maintenance.

Q2 Q3

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

I progressed into an engineer with Matthew Hall, then joined Sulzer Infra (now Engie) and was quickly made up to a supervisor, then made my way up through the ranks to contract manager and service manager, before leaving and joining Westway as an operations manager and then operations director.

HOW DO YOU CHALLENGE THE

STATUS QUO?

I believe the status in the UK is currently working to the industry standard whilst trying to be the cheapest. Resource and material costs are rising, the technical skill base is depleting, and margins are reducing further. To challenge this, we need to invest in people, to ensure the engineering skill base elevates itself from where it is today, with greater inhouse delivery and less reliance of sub-contractors.

Q4

SINCE YOU STARTED IN FM WHAT HAS

BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGE THE INDUSTRY HAS SEEN/

YOU HAVE OBSERVED? Communication has been the biggest change, but that’s not only for our industry. Thirty years ago, something urgent was a phone call followed up by a fax, today everyone communicates with email, and as we

60 | TOMORROW’S FM

are all so accessible the response is expected almost straight away, diluting the importance of urgency.

Q5

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,

DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?

Ross Brawn. He started out as a mechanical craft apprentice, before joining motor and then Formula 1. I admire his engineering background which saw him help Michael Schumacher win his seven F1 world championships.

Q6 Q7

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM?

I like sci-fi and have always been a fan of Star Trek. I think one of my early favourite films was Star Trek 2 The Wrath of Khan. Great special effects of its time in 1982.

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY

WITH THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD

THEY BE AND WHY? Winston Churchill as I would love to hear form the man himself on how his determination and resolve inspired the nation at the time of immense crises. Richard Branson so I ask about his new space programme and his vision of

making space travel accessible to the public.

Q8

ANY ADVICE TO SOMEONE JUST

STARTING OUT IN

THE INDUSTRY? Believe in yourself, be 100% committed, knuckle down and work hard to learn your trade and understand the industry. Have a good work ethic and try to enjoy what you do. This is a great industry and you can truly succeed if you have the desire and put your mind to it.

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE

OF THE FM INDUSTRY?

Technology is changing and maintaining plant today is very much different from 20 or 30 years ago. There are much fewer moving parts, which in turn means less to fail and maintain, as most plant failures emanates from mechanical wear. I believe the future will see FM companies challenge the standard servicing, with reduced resource to actually maintain plant, however utilising the additional resource to assist the customer for other services, possibly front of house upkeep.

Q10

PHIL BRYANT, STRATEGIC

ACCOUNTS MANAGER AT AMTHAL FIRE & SECURITY, ASKS: WHICH AREA OF FM DO YOU THINK COULD BE BEST TRANSFORMED

THROUGH TECHNOLOGY? Smart buildings will help transform the way we report, with live data and reports being uploaded almost instantaneously giving customers greater access to their compliance reporting. Being able to pull analytical reports through reporting on trends to learn how to reduce reactive costs, in both hard and soft services.
