10 QUESTIONS
10 QUESTIONS WITH... PHIL HOLLAND
Each issue we ask an industry professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Phil Holland, Managing Director, Integrated Facilities Management, Mitie.
My first role was as a Regional Director at Dalkia for the north of the UK. And when Mitie acquired Dalkia, I moved into their technical FM business before being asked to head up our integrated offering – a role that continues to challenge and excite me every day.

Q3
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF
IN THREE WORDS? Analytical, leader, listener.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first job was working at the Ford plant in Dagenham as part of my degree course. It was a great opportunity for me; I got involved in all of the engineering aspects of the paint shop and learned a lot. Above all, it taught me the importance of planning.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FM INDUSTRY?
I can remember first hearing the term ‘FM’ back in the late 1990s and thinking it sounded like an interesting and exciting place to be.
Having spent my pre-FM career working client-side in a contracting environment (mainly in electronics manufacturing and after sales support), I was given the opportunity to work in hard FM about ten years ago now.

IF YOU COULD GIVE YOUR PAST SELF ONE
PIECE OF ADVICE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Prioritise. There’s always work to be done, but the ability to establish what should be done first is a real skill that creates time to think.
Q5
WHAT SHOULD FMS BE DOING THAT
THEY’RE NOT?
I always think we could spend more quality time with our clients, addressing how we can resolve or support them with any issues or concerns in order to give them more time to focus on their core business. It’s easy to be caught up in our own internal business priorities and miss the key things that are going on.
Q6
WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND?
Unwind in FM…?! In all seriousness, I have a great family that I spend time with. I also keep myself active by participating in the annual London Revolution event – a two-day, 190 mile bike ride that Mitie has sponsored for the last three years. It gives me some quiet time to think about things… Although usually I’m thinking: ‘When is this bike ride going to be over?’
Q7
WHAT WOULD BE THE FIRST RECORD ON YOUR
DESERT ISLAND DISC?
I always find a bit of Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ sets the day up well.
Q8
WHICH THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD
YOU INVITE TO YOUR ULTIMATE DINNER PARTY?
Billy Wright, Steve Bull and my Dad. We’d spend the evening talking football and Wolves’ great past!
Q9
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE OF THE
FM INDUSTRY?
Technology has undoubtedly shaped the industry over recent years, helping us deliver our services quicker, greener and more efficiently while also allowing us to make smarter and better-informed decisions on the ground.
I think the wealth of data collected can be transformed into effective information for better planning decisions, but we cannot lose sight of the personal touch and the problem- solving element of FM and how that evolves in future.
Q10
DO YOU FEEL THE SOFT LANDINGS
INITIATIVE WILL HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE HANDOVER OF BUILDINGS FROM CONSTRUCTION TO FM?
I think any initiative that considers how a building will operate and be maintained in the future and acts upon experiences and learnings in advance can only be beneficial. There is a definite desire and capability in FM to work with clients and constructors in this area.
