REGULAR 10 QUESTIONS WITH...
In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month we spoke to Nigel Howe, Senior Project Manager, The British Institute of Cleaning Science.
Q1 Q2
Q3 Q4
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
Apprentice compositor with a local newspaper group.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
Applied for a role as a trainer with the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) to train people working in the cleaning, hygiene and FM sectors.
HOW DO YOU CHALLENGE THE
STATUS QUO?
Question the value of traditional skills to the industry considering the advances in building design, materials, and structure, and in the evolving world of robotics and AI.
SINCE YOU STARTED IN FM WHAT HAS
BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGE THE INDUSTRY HAS SEEN/
YOU HAVE OBSERVED? The introduction of robotics to carry out essential but often mundane and time-consuming tasks, freeing up the time for cleaning operatives to concentrate on the more intricate tasks. Sometimes it is the tasks that few people notice that make the most difference to the quality of the environment.
Q5 Q6
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,
DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? Tim Cook, CEO of Apple
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM??
It would be a musical but probably depends on my mood. So, pick any one from Grease (just such a feel-good film), Burlesque (Cher and Christina
52 | TOMORROW’S FM
Aguilera – what’s not to like), or the Stephen Spielberg 2021 remake of West Side Story (Ariana DeBose has an amazing voice).
Q7
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY
WITH THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD
THEY BE AND WHY? Elvis Presley – been a fan of his music since his records were frequently played at home growing up. Tony Blackburn – yes, his jokes are worse than the ones you get in a Christmas cracker, but you can’t fault his music knowledge or ability to talk up to the vocal when presenting on radio. Tim Cook – as a total Apple fan boy it’s a no brainer.
Q8 Q9
ANY ADVICE TO SOMEONE
JUST STARTING OUT IN
THE INDUSTRY? Be proactive rather than reactive – get out from behind the desk, walk the building regularly and note any minor issues that could become a major problem if not resolved early enough and act on them.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE
OF THE FM INDUSTRY?
I think the focus will be on the implementation of technology to drive operational efficiency, and sustainability initiatives to drive companies towards their net zero targets.
10WHICH AREA OF FM
Very similar to a previous question – the cleaning operation. With the introduction of robotics, I fully
DO YOU THINK COULD
BE BEST TRANSFORMED THROUGH TECHNOLOGY?
appreciate that people are fearful for their jobs thinking they will not be required but the fact is that they will be required but their roles will change. Who is going to maintain the robots? Who will set up their programmes/ schedules? Who will monitor their performance?
