Also from Tork is an interactive hand hygiene training module designed to inform, engage and inspire. Developed in collaboration with behavioural scientists and hand hygiene experts, Tork Clean Hands Training invites users into the digital world where they face a series of scenarios in which hand hygiene needs to be carried out. The training is accessible free online via any electronic device.

At the time of writing Heathrow had not yet announced the final 32 names for its robot cleaning team. There were some negative suggestions such as ‘Job Pincher’ and: ‘I took a real person’s Job-Bot’ which made it clear that not everyone was comfortable with machines taking on jobs traditionally carried out by humans.

But it is undeniable that the time saved when repetitive, tedious tasks are automated can be invested instead in

improving other areas of the airport environment. And this ultimately enhances the experience for all users while also offering greater opportunities for staff to focus on more meaningful, satisfying work.

The fact that hundreds of people came up with appropriate, clever or fun suggestions for the robots proved that the campaign worked. Passengers engaged with the process and only a handful of respondents came up with names that demonstrated any dislike or distrust of the automatons.

Technology can be scary – and the pace at which it is being developed is disconcerting. But the universal take-up of smartphones proves that we are ready to embrace the change and are becoming more comfortable with technology in all its forms. Manufacturers and facilities will therefore continue to come up with creative ideas to help us get on board with robots, digital systems and AI in a positive way
