(DC) electricity. With built in AC to DC conversion, they are able to run direct from single phase or three phase mains supplies. This means that EC fans deliver high performance, silent speed control and a long life expectancy in a product which is the same size as the old, power hungry AC products it replaces.
Carillion Breathe also completed the EC motor retrofit to the fan coil units in Blocks two and three. Again, the motors here were 25 years old and had exceeded their operational life, resulting in increasing failures and noise issues. The improvements and benefits were:
Noise Reduction A noise survey was conducted throughout each floor of each block, before and after the motor retrofit. The noise levels reduced from 41NR (Noise Rating) to 34NR, following the EC fan retrofit. The units are now well below industry noise level standards of 38NR.
Longer Life The motors are expected to last longer than their predecessors, with fewer failures due to less vibration and less maintenance.

Here, ebm-papst introduces a recent project for RBS Bank where their upgraded HVAC equipment has resulted in over 50% savings.
The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) is one of the oldest banks in the UK. Within their Energy Reduction Programme, they committed to reduce the environmental impact of serving their customers. As part of this programme, Carillion-Breathe, who deliver multi- disciplinary holistic energy efficiency programmes, identified that there was an opportunity to save energy by replacing the existing motors within the Air Handling Units (AHUs) at RBS’s Trinity Quay site in Bristol.
The motors and fans within the AHUs were around 25 years old and as such, were outdated and inefficient. They were powered by twin AC motors, both driven by a single belt, which dictated rotation of both motors. This created more torque and unnecessary energy wastage.
The existing motors were to be replaced with ebm- papst’s high efficiency EC fans. EC fans use permanent magnet motors, running on high voltage direct current

Energy Savings Carillion Breathe measured the energy consumption before and after the retrofit for 49 FCUs (10% of total). After the retrofit, they adjusted the fan speeds to match the previous air volumes. Results showed that 55% energy savings were delivered. This is more than the 40% they conservatively proposed at the design stage.

In a retrofit, specific components are upgraded to improve the performance of an existing system. They are typically seen as a cheaper method to save on energy consumption, carbon emissions and maintenance; without the hefty pay out of installing a completely new HVAC system. They are, in most cases, directly interchangeable with their inefficient predecessors, allowing for simple replacement with minimal disruption.
