The rapid advances made in LED lighting technology are challenging the boundaries of what can be achieved, both in terms of energy saving and cutting-edge design. Ian Drinkwater, Managing Director of trade signage supplier Applelec, explores what advancements in LED technology mean for FMs and designers.
It’s a good time to be involved in technology. The November Budget delivered a real shot in the arm for the UK’s tech industry as a whole, at the centre of which was Chancellor Philip Hammond’s vision of a post-Brexit Britain leading the way in a new, high-tech industrial revolution.
Of course, the lighting sector has been enjoying its own revolution in terms of how technology is enabling both designers and managers to achieve far more than was possible a decade ago.

The advent of LED luminaires has played a major part in this, alongside developments such as IoT-enabled schemes and wireless control. Reduced energy costs, improved efficiency and a longer lifespan have understandably tempted facilities managers to choose the LED option over their fluorescent equivalents, enabling impressive savings to be made along the way.
Meanwhile, designers have embraced the possibilities that LED luminaires present, enabling the creation of bold and ambitious schemes on both large and small scales.
