DRIVING DOCKS’ COST REDUCTION


James Gunning from cable management specialist, Unitrunk, discusses the cable


management installation that has enabled a low energy lighting scheme at a new car export and import stock holding facility at Southampton Dock.


Currently worth around £71 billion, the UK car industry is driven by imports from mainland Europe for distribution to dealerships across Great Britain along with exports from UK car manufacturing plants to buyers on the continent. Many of those vehicles leave our shores or arrive here via Southampton every week and require short term storage on the dockside while they await onward transportation to the retail point of sale.


Constructed as part of a £450 million investment in upgrading the seafront and improving the ferry terminals in Southampton, new multi-deck car parks at the port will enable vehicles to be stored securely. Electrical contractor, Rigfone Electrics working in partnership with Main Contractor Morgan Sindall Group, has recently completed multi-decks six and seven as part of the scheme and, after significant savings were realised by switching to LED fittings on multi-deck five, the most recent additions to the car storage facilities utilise more than 1,000 IP65-rated LED fittings.


Time and Cost Efficient The lighting strategy for the multi-decks has not only helped to reduce operational costs through reduced energy consumption for the LED fittings; the switch has also led to a reduction in the amount of cabling required and consequently, a reduction in the amount of cable management. This has reduced both the cost of materials for the project and the labour required to deliver the installation.


Meanwhile, a lighting control system that combines presence detection with daylight harvesting to eliminate the use of electric lighting when there is no-one present and avoid unnecessary lighting of the perimeter areas on days where there is abundant sunshine, will also contribute to operational cost savings.


But the time and cost savings achieved on the project do not stop there. Rigfone specified Unitrunk’s RIS (Rapid Installation Systems) cable management solutions after using them on a Ministry of Defence project and was so impressed by the speed and ease of installation provided by Unitrunk EasyConnect cable basket that the company specified the same system for all submains, power, lighting control and lighting containment requirements on multi-decks 6 and 7.


For an installation totalling 20km of cable management, the savings of a couple minutes and a couple of pence on each

Open to the elements on all sides, the multi-decks have been specified with IP65 light fittings to ensure safe and reliable operation in a potentially damp and saline atmosphere and the EasyConnect basket has been specified in hot dip galvanised steel with stainless steel fixings. Due to the high ceilings on each level, the cable management system is suspended from the concrete slab by metal rods, which have been inserted into holes drilled into the slab at 1.5m intervals and fixed in place with resin; a system that has been guaranteed for a minimum of ten years.


Just one riser and four runs of EasyConnect cable basket per storey have been installed to cover the needs of the building, including the cabling for the DALI lighting control system, which operates presence detection with time out on all stairs and three zones per building, along with the daylight harvesting.
