A Personalised Approach


Digital care planning and compliance management isn’t something only the biggest providers consider; it is equally important to the smaller, family-run care homes. At Orton Manor Nursing Home, in Water Orton on the outskirts of Birmingham, the owner and management team are ambitious about improving and delivering care that is personalised and lives up to the standards of their ethos. But all is not easy and straightforward- the funding crisis has leſt its traces and here is no different.


The owner of the care home, Dr Shahzada Ahmed, is a consultant ear, nose and throat specialist and is considered one of the UK’s leading rhinologists. Dr Ahmed grew up in and around his family’s care home, and has found the perfect balance of entrepreneurship and altruism required to keep developing their service.


Aſter a difficult start, Orton Manor has built an experienced team delivering nursing, dementia and palliative care for up to 40 residents. Their key to success is making it feel like home,

Dr Ahmed explained: “We are like one big family here. There is no great hierarchy within the team or the residents. We are all in this together.”


The care home has recently been inspected and received a “Good” outcome by CQC inspectors. The general reception of this has been appreciative and rewarding. Something that is clear when speaking to Gemma Broth, who is the Registered Manager of the service.


Gemma commented: “We are happy and proud that our hard work has been recognised. We know that this is an achievement that we have obtained through dedication to our common goals.”


Until recently, the local documentation systems were predominantly paper-based, which created considerable demands on the staff as they kept manually maintaining each resident’s care plan. Seeing how technology had played a
