Even with the best daily regimes, there are times when additional cleaning is needed to maintain the appearance and freshness of the care home. Smells can be a particular distraction. These are typically caused by bodily fluids and general soiling of floors, carpets and surfaces in frequent use areas such as bedrooms, bathrooms and communal spaces. The resulting organic residues can provide a food source for bacteria which emit gases we perceive as unpleasant smells as they digest the material.
Daily surface cleaning and disinfection is crucial in health and social care settings. Cleaning helps to maintain and enhance the appearance of the facility, while disinfection removes potentially harmful pathogens that can cause illness. Research has determined that most infections are spread by touch. This means that effective surface disinfection and hand hygiene are vital to breaking the chain of transmission.
Conventional surface cleaning and disinfection products containing chlorine or quats as the active ingredient are effective but can have drawbacks, including low efficacy against some pathogens of concern such as norovirus and C. Diff. Innovative products containing Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide (AHP), including Diversey’s Oxivir range, remove many of these limitations while offering advantages including shorter contact times, broader spectrum performance, suitability for more surfaces, and lower safety classification.
Oxivir Excel, for example, is a cleaner disinfectant for daily and frequent cleaning that is highly effective against a wide range of viruses, spores, yeasts, and fungi found in care settings, including C. diff, MRSA, Norovirus, E. coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Its short contact time and broad-spectrum efficacy - tested to the latest EN standards - simplifies processes: just one product is needed, whereas multiple alternatives offering similar performance would add complexity. It is suitable for a wide range of hard surfaces and is Woolsafe approved.

Regular use with a product such as Diversey’s Good Sense Breakdown can help to prevent and remove organic residues. It can be used dilute for regular preventative cleaning or poured neat down sinks and drains for rapid remedial results. In addition to a wide range of hard surfaces, it is also suitable for carpets and upholstery. It contains enzymes to destroy the organic residues and patented Odour Neutralising Technology (ONT), an ingenious ingredient that chemically deactivates the molecules which cause bad smells. This means that the product does not need to contain strong perfumes to mask the smell. The product is available in five-litre containers and one-litre containers will be available in the near future.
Another product containing ONT that is ideal for care homes is Good Sense Fresh room and fabric freshener. This ready-to- use product is simply sprayed on to carpets, upholstery and other fabrics to produce a long-lasting, pleasant fragrance. It is an ideal product to freshen up any room quickly and easily.
Other areas of the home which require period cleaning include guest bathrooms, where mould can be an unwelcome distraction. Sani Mould Out is a powerful grout cleaner that removes mould, mildew and fungus from ceramic and tiled areas. Its high-alkaline formulation also removes body fat and soap scum, helping to prevent bad smells and promote better hygiene.
