AWARDS 2024 2ND PLACE

SLEEP COUNSELLING FOR ADULTS COURSE BY SLEEP ACTION Sleep is crucial for our health and wellbeing, yet it is oſten overlooked or given low priority. Chronic sleep deprivation can be particularly detrimental to the physical and mental health of adults with additional needs, as it can exacerbate conditions such as chronic pain and anxiety. Poor sleep can also make it more difficult for individuals with additional needs to communicate and engage, leading to feelings of isolation and frustration.

Improving sleep can reduce the frequency and severity of aggressive behaviour, self-injurious behaviour, and wandering; making care homes a safer and more peaceful environment for both residents and staff. It can also improve participation in activities, enhancing both the overall quality of residents' lives and the care home’s reputation as a high-quality provider of care.

Healthy sleep is vital to residents with additional needs, but what can be done in care homes to better support them?

Sleep Action’s newest training course, Sleep Counselling for Adults, is designed to provide health and social care professionals with the comprehensive knowledge and skills necessary to deliver tailored interventions for a range of sleep issues. The course is delivered using a blended learning approach; an initial set of modules completed online to cover the theory around sleep physiology, psychology and the impact for those with complex needs, followed by virtual group sessions to cover the practical elements around supporting someone to improve their sleep. Participants are provided with a full package of resources, as well as ongoing support from Sleep Action, in order to enable them to carry out sleep counselling support and promote healthy sleep for adults with complex needs.

PLACE NOBI SMART LAMP BY NOBI

The Nobi Smart Lamp uses AI technology to both prevent and detect falls, which are the most significant cause of fatal injuries in the elderly. The functionality is coupled with beautiful design, to fit seamlessly into a room and be unobtrusive until it is needed. The first results of a pilot at Hartland House in Cumbria showed the number of falls has been reduced by 84% and response time reduced from 57 minutes to less than two minutes.

If a fall occurs the lamp talks to the resident to ask if they have fallen. If there is any response except for a clear ‘no’ carers are immediately alerted, and an abstract stick-figure image is sent to show carers where the person is lying.

Nobi prevents falls by soſtly illuminating a room as soon as a person sits up in bed. If they get out of bed the room is fully lit to prevent trips. These settings can be adjusted for frequent fallers, so a carer is alerted as soon as they sit up in bed. Then they can be reached before they try to get up.

The lamp eliminates life-threatening long-lies, and 100% of falls are detected, including hidden falls, where the person can get up themselves. The AI technology built into the smart lamp can also predict certain falls. Changes in walking pace, length of stride and even the person’s posture when sitting are monitored and can be used to alert caregivers of a potential risk.

The lamp takes repetitive administrative tasks off caregivers’ hands. Nobi can be integrated with devices like smart scales and blood pressure monitors to automatically and efficiently log health measurements, freeing up time for duties that really make a difference.
