SENIOR APPOINTMENT Aſter a decade of continued growth that has seen it open 58 new homes and grow its colleague base to over 10,000, Care UK has announced the appointment of Martin Friend to the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer.
Martin will join the Care UK’s executive team in January 2022, reporting directly to Chief Executive Andrew Knight, and will be taking on overall accountability for operations across the business. In particular, he will be charged with continuing to build on the company’s enviable track record of care quality and transitioning the 26 Sunrise and Gracewell homes which came under Care UK’s management this month.
Care UK’s Chief Executive Andrew Knight said: “The addition of this role into our business is a natural evolution given our ever- increasing scale. I have no doubt Martin’s experience, energy and his fresh perspective will bring a valuable contribution to our future growth plans, particularly our focus on expanding our role as a quality provider of homes for people funding their own care. I look forward to working with him to build on the great work of our operational teams and deliver on our longer-term operational strategy.”

JASON STATHAM RECORDS BIRTHDAY MESSAGE FOR
100-YEAR-OLD WWII VETERAN Hollywood star Jason Statham has sent a special 100th birthday message to a WWII veteran and superfan.
Joyce Ensell received the video message from the Hollywood hunk during a birthday party at Royal Star & Garter, in Solihull, on Monday 22 November.
She regularly watches the action-thriller actor’s high-octane films from her room at the care home.
was instrumental in successfully integrating a number of acquisitions, including Virgin Active and, more recently, Aspen Healthcare and led the delivery and growth of Nuffield Health’s award- winning connected health model to 1.5 million customers per annum. Prior to this role he was responsible for Nuffield’s fitness and wellbeing services – a role he took up in 2009 aſter working in the leisure, telecommunications, and sporting sectors.
Commenting on his appointment, Martin Friend said: “I am incredibly excited about this opportunity. The arrival of teams from Sunrise and Gracewell, alongside Care UK’s already ambitious development programme, make this a fantastic time to be joining the company. My first priority will be to meet as many of the operations team as I can to really understand the challenges of the business and how we can best deliver on the company’s long-term goals.”

Staff at the Home, which provides care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia, organised the video message. They also arranged for a life-sized cardboard cut-out of the actor to take pride of place during the party, alongside a cake, flowers and a card from Her Majesty the Queen.
Joyce was born into a mining family in Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1921. She served in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) from 1941 to 1944, reaching the rank of Leading Aircraſtwoman, and met her husband Leslie, an RAF electrician, during the war. The couple married in 1943 and later settled in Birmingham, where Joyce worked as a school dinner lady in the 1950s and ‘60s.
In the birthday message, Jason Statham pays tribute to Joyce. He says: “I’m flattered you’re a fan of mine, but more than that, I’m a big fan of yours. And I’d like to say that being in the Royal Air Force in the Second World War is the real and true definition of what a hero is. Thanks for your bravery. I send you lots of love on your big, special day.”
Joyce celebrated her birthday with other residents, who enjoyed cake and bubbly. Aſterwards, the star-struck centenarian said: “I can’t believe it. Thank you to everyone at Royal Star & Garter for giving me a very happy day.”
The great-grandmother has been a resident at Royal Star & Garter since January 2019. She added aſterwards: “I had a lovely birthday party. I don’t feel 100. I am very happy at Royal Star & Garter, everything is great.”
