FITNESS & EXERCISE
ACTIVE CARE
Fitness is fundamental to the future of care, says Amrit Dhaliwal, Founder and CEO of Walfinch home care.
Fitness is almost an invisible factor in care. It's routinely neglected by many care providers, but neglecting it will not help clients and will affect whole nation's health.
If care is about maintaining good health, fitness should be a part of that. The World Health Organisation (WHO) states: “Regular physical activity is proven to help prevent and manage non- communicable diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, stroke, diabetes and several cancers. It also helps to maintain a healthy body weight and can improve mental health, quality of life and wellbeing.”
IT'S NOT ALWAYS ‘JUST OLD AGE’
Many people, even without diagnosed conditions, resign themselves to limited lives because they attribute their inability to do things to ageing. Yet even minor improvements in fitness can prevent or even reverse symptoms, improving lives and saving the NHS money.
ENCOURAGING FITNESS IN CARE
Care that includes more activity and mobility can help roll back the effects of medical conditions, restore physical ability, help counter mental ill-health and increase wellbeing. Our clients who book an hour of care or more are offered activity of their choice, aided by their carers, such as gardening, or moving more around their home. Also, our offices run Thrive Clubs, local community activity sessions such as chair yoga, free of charge.
We have seen the results. 34 ACTIVITY HELPS SUE WALK AGAIN
Our client Sue left hospital unable to stand. As part of Sue's care, carer Hannah took her by wheelchair to the local Walfinch Thrive Club, which offers chair exercise. Within weeks Sue could walk again.
Sue told us: “It made a massive difference me. Now I have got stronger and can walk to the class on my own.” Sue no longer

MARGARET RECOVERS HER LEGS
Walfinch franchisee Poojita Patel met new client Margaret, who had swollen, almost purple, legs. Poojita told me: “Within two weeks they were much better because we included 15 minutes of exercise, mobilisation and a tiny massage on each daily care visit.” Margaret later said: “Since starting with Walfinch, the difference in my wellbeing has been incredible. I can actually see the shape of my legs again, and even my toes. That alone shows how much progress has been made with the right level of care and support.”
