REGULAR
A worthy cause We find out why the Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) supports Grief Encounter.
Over the six years since Grief Encounter was named the CHSA’s nominated charity we have donated £50,000. This includes the £10,000 we were able to donate this year, thanks to the generosity of our members.
Like many others in the industry, we at the CHSA raise funds for charity because we believe in the importance of giving something back to the community. It is one of our fundamental values, sitting alongside our commitment to standards and ethics in business.
Grief Encounter became our nominated charity in 2019. We are incredibly proud of the connection we have maintained over the past six years.
Grief Encounter was set up in 2004 by Dr Shelley Gilbert MBE to offer bereaved children and young people a safe space to grieve and understand their feelings following the death of a parent or sibling. She understood the value of this and the impact of its absence firsthand, after receiving no professional help or support following the death of both of her parents before she was nine years old.
Today the charity supports grieving children, young people and their families to find hope, healing and build resilience following the death of someone close.
One child in every UK classroom will experience the death of someone close by the time they reach 16 years old. This can be devastating for a child or young person. Their world can turn upside down, leaving them feeling fearful, isolated and utterly lost. Studies have shown bereaved children can face long-term social and emotional difficulties if they do not receive the right support at the right time, following the death of someone close. This is why Grief Encounter’s work is so important.
Support is available in many different forms, from counselling and therapy to residentials and family fun days.

There are plenty of different resources and training for professionals who may be working with bereaved children and young people.
Therapy helps children and young people explore difficult emotions openly and honestly and the donations we have made to date have funded at least 350 sessions. Our donations have also paid for a residential weekend for 15 families. Every weekend makes a difference, providing opportunities for young people to develop resilience and create meaningful friendships and connections.
A young person who received support from Grief Encounter said: “Here [at Grief Encounter], I feel like I can open up slowly and let out my feelings bit by bit, without being forced to. I like it because it feels like they really listen to me. I feel much better, much more capable of sharing my feelings.”
To provide this broad range of services, Grief Encounter depends entirely on the generosity of its supporters. At the CHSA, we are incredibly proud to be one of them.
It is the generosity of our members and their guests, and our sponsors of our annual Gala Ball who make it possible. While we have fun, connecting with colleagues and enjoying comedians, magicians and dancing until the early hours, we raise funds to support children and young people in possibly their darkest hours.
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attends our Gala Ball. This includes our sponsors, who were Greyland, Northwood, Polaris, SC Johnson and Vow Wholesale this year. Their contributions make it possible for us to support Grief Encounter and so help change the lives of children and young people.
