the property to as close to pre-claim condition as possible and to carry out sympathetic, specialist restoration on the valuable and historical museum pieces damaged during the flood.


Initially ServiceMaster Clean brought in its specialist Disaster Restoration team to decontaminate, clean and sanitise the property. The team of six trained technicians removed all of the contents, stripped back the flooring and carried out the required sanitisation to create a stable environment.


Head of Commercial Development with ServiceMaster Clean, Malcolm Holmes commented: “The policy holder was understandably very concerned about the use of chemical products and the cleaning procedures that were necessary for us to carry out in order to get the property safe for use. We worked very closely with him to reassure him that we would be as sympathetic to the museum and its unique books, documents and pictures as possible whilst ensuring the property was correctly sanitised.”


At this point the property was entirely


emptied and ServiceMaster Clean worked with its client to agree the most appropriate method of drying the property. They brought in specialist drying equipment and over a five week period ensured both the residential property and the museum were dry and habitable.


At this point the job of restoring the museum’s contents began and for this ServiceMaster Clean enlisted the skills of its Furniture Medic network. Skilled in the repair and restoration of all types of furniture, Furniture Medic initially catalogued each item from books and pictures to paintings and furniture. The Furniture Medic team involved upward of 20 technicians over the course of the project and restored aviation memorabilia, trophies, books and furniture.


Dave Canderton, one of Furniture Medic’s experts said: “The Furniture Medic technicians are used to working with customers who value their much loved possessions and are skilled in various types of restoration work. However, this job demonstrated possibly the most diverse mix of restoration jobs that we have come across to date.


“Not only were there valuable pieces of traditionally hand crafted Mouseman furniture but also bespoke, irreplaceable pieces such as a table that was made from the solid oak doors that had come from a BMW dealership that the owner managed prior to owning the museum.


“This project was unique for us in that there


is usually the option to replace if the restoration is too costly or time consuming. Restoration was the only route with the majority of the museum items as they were unique and irreplaceable.”


For ServiceMaster Clean and Furniture Medic, this became as much about supporting the policy holder to rebuild his museum as it was about restoring the property and possessions.


Malcolm continued: “The museum was his passion. He invested so much time and energy in making it what it is today that it would have been hard not to get caught up in his enthusiasm for what he does, and we all did. We handled every piece of furniture and memorabilia from the museum and got a real glimpse into his world.”


ServiceMaster Clean was able to have the museum back open within a few weeks of the initial flood, minus its damaged possessions. The total cost of the restoration of the museum and its contents was £60,000 and the entire project took nearly one year to complete, with no items lost.


Malcolm added: “The unexpected can happen at any time and it is just as important to plan for these events. Fire damage, burst pipes and leaks, vandalism, trauma and emergency cleaning are unwanted events that can have lasting effects on the property’s structure and the health of tenants if not dealt with quickly and professionally. Using a specialist restoration provider should give organisations and residents the confidence that their job will be handled quickly, with minimum disruption and to an industry- recognised standard.”
