The vinyl word in floor cleaning

Amtico supply us with some advice for keeping vinyl flooring looking its best, with some simple cleaning steps to take.

When a more thorough clean is needed, vinyl can be easily mopped with a cleaning solution. There are a wide variety of cleaning solutions available on the market, and some flooring companies produce their own to go with their flooring, but some – including ours – can be used with other brands of flooring. It’s always worth discussing with any flooring provider before installing a new floor what cleaning products they would recommend. This is particularly important for commercial projects.

Amtico were part of a project at the University of Leeds which involved a large area of communal hallways and staircases being refitted with Amtico Signature collection. In cases like this, where an outside company will likely do the cleaning, it’s important to communicate with them to work out the best way to keep the floors looking their best.

“Cleaning and

maintaining vinyl flooring can be

much quicker and easier than other flooring options.”

Ensuring your floors are cleaned and maintained correctly should be a key consideration for any business or home. With different flooring materials, the techniques to clean and maintain them will vary.

It goes without saying that any spills or drops should be dealt with immediately. An advantage of vinyl is that it’s stain resistant, unlike carpet or wood. Furthermore, it’s easier to clean quickly.

The first step to cleaning vinyl is to make sure the floor is swept clean of any dust and dirt. By removing this first, it makes sure the floor is free of anything which could make cleaning it more difficult. Depending on the number of people walking across the floor, sweeping with a soft brush may be all that needs to be done from day-to-day.

16 | FLOORCARE AND MAINTENANCE

With vinyl flooring simple equipment can be used, such as a traditional string mop and wringer bucket, and this makes vinyl an easy floor to clean at home as well as in a business environment.

When it comes to maintaining vinyl flooring there are two key things to remember. Firstly, as with any flooring, the more you can do to protect the floor in the first place, the easier it will be to maintain. Adding protective felt pads to the feet of tables and chairs will help protect your floor if you ever have to move the furniture. With protective pads in place, your vinyl will be better protected against scratches or scuffs. It can also be beneficial with vinyl flooring to put rugs down to help protect the flooring in places such as under a sofa or table or use furniture cups to help spread the load.

The second key point is that it’s possible to recoat the vinyl should it be damaged. To do this, the floor will need a protective dressing layer applied. With Amtico flooring, if the floor does receive any minor scuffs or marks, you can use our Stripper solution to remove the top layer of dressing along with those marks. You can then reapply a new layer of dressing to protect the vinyl. This can be particularly useful in large commercial areas where, after some time with heavy foot traffic, floors may start to look tired or heavily scuffed in places.

Cleaning and maintaining vinyl flooring can be much quicker and easier than other flooring options, especially when dealing with large spaces in business locations. During the current COVID-19 situation, ensuring floors and other surfaces are clean is vital.
