WASHROOM HYGIENE "100% recycled

tissues represent the most

sensible, easy- to-implement change.”

Wiping the slate clean

Alasdair Sharp, UKI Sales Manager at Satino, looks at how washroom hygiene innovations are helping to benefit the environment.

As businesses look to improve their sustainability in line with net zero targets, it’s important we focus on the changes being made within companies for the sake of the future.

Family business Satino by WEPA has been able to bring a fresh perspective into the industry whilst quickly and proactively implementing policies that increase the sustainability of its products and processes as flagbearers for ecological evolution.

Satino’s sustainability methods extend beyond its own operations as it works alongside its clients – which include hotels, venues, shops, and business properties – advising on the right hygiene solutions for their specific needs, so it can be part of the industry’s sustainability solution, rather than the problem. With net zero targets a priority for businesses, Satino by WEPA is helping its clients recognise the positive impact that washrooms can have in meeting those targets.

Recycled papers

For washrooms, 100% recycled tissues represent the most sensible, easy-to-implement change. Whilst virgin fibres remain integral to the industry, balancing their usage with sustainable alternatives conjures greater harmony.

Research into more planet-friendly raw material alternatives including bamboo – the world’s fastest growing plant – and straw is increasing, alongside research into widening the waste streams for creating recycled papers. Used beverage packaging, labels, and cardboard cups are viable sources, but what the industry can recycle will only grow as research intensifies.

Currently, around 20% of fibres used in global paper products are made from recycled sources, with Satino operating at 40%. Yet, we feel the industry is acting too slowly, which is why Satino has made the fast-paced evolution of its sustainable practices a priority. It is also helping with the education around recycled paper, helping clients understand where it comes from and what it represents as we make important strides towards industry- wide sustainability.

Satino by WEPA’s research into sustainability has led to the successful launch of its cardboard dispenser. Made from 100% recycled fibreboard, the dispenser is ideal for events as it can be easily recycled after use, unlike plastic alternatives. Its white dispenser meanwhile, coated in protective paint, has a longer lifespan, making it a viable long-term dispenser option too.

Hands-free hand hygiene

Research has found that 80% of infections are passed on through a combination of touch and poor hand hygiene. As such, combining great hygiene with hands-free solutions, like sensor-operated soap dispensers, is ideal. They can also be extremely economical due to their long refill intervals. As they dispense a consistent amount of soap each time, it lessens the likelihood of users being excessive in their application, dispensing the optimum amount for quality hygiene and prolonging refills. It’s important too that the products used are free of microplastics, making them a far safer option for the planet, and we’re seeing washrooms commonly opt for these eco-friendly options.

Energy efficiency

Another way for businesses to ensure their washrooms are sustainable is to assess the supply chain of their products. Choosing suppliers that use low-carbon production and delivery methods, as well as ensuring their partners do the same, and that their products are FSC and PFEC certified will make a huge difference in meeting sustainability targets.

Meanwhile, in the face of rapidly rising energy costs, businesses are looking at new ways to reduce their energy consumption. Therefore, replacing hand dryers with recycled paper towels can yield valuable, cost-saving results for businesses.

It’s important the industry’s sustainability momentum continues and gathers more speed. As it does, we strive for those all-important sustainability targets. As Satino releases its latest sustainability report, self-reflection and clear pathways forward are vital for all.
