CASE STUDIES Don’t gamble on the cleaning

Black or red? At this London casino, Ross Osbourne and Roger Rees opt for both, but not on the tables floors.

Keeping it black and red and not letting it get grey and dirty was the challenge facing the joint directors of Jangro- member Maintenance Supply Company, before they took over the cleaning contract at the Empire Casino in the West End’s Leicester Square.

Black and red are the colours that predominate on the carpets fitted in the prestigious venue. Ross and Roger advised the operators to see both a system that can offer deep cleaning, as well as investigate a quick cleaning maintenance method.

Prochem was brought in to assist with an on-site demonstration. Sales & Training Manager, Phil Jones, met them at the casino at the crack of dawn.

Phil said: “These environments operate virtually 24 hours a day, so the potential window for cleaning can be challenging. You have large rooms but with multiple tables and chairs dotted around, making cleaning an awkward proposition at the best of times.”

Phil demonstrated to cleaning staff a walk-behind, self- propelled Prochem Polaris 800 extraction machine, which made light work of the corridors and open communal areas. Fitted with an additional wand and hose, it made fast work of all the hard-to-reach areas, such as under the gaming tables.

Phil reflected: “This offers an excellent deep clean, but Taking the strain off the train

Prochem teamed up with Forbo to advise a rail provider on keeping carpets on its large train fleet working efficiently and looking good.

Colchester-based Greater Anglia operates the East Anglia franchise, providing commuter and intercity services from London Liverpool Street Station to England’s East seaboard counties and parts of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Robert Avins, Greater Anglia’s Presentation Manager, said: “With high footfall to user areas on our trains, we recognise the need to keep carpets looking good and fit for purpose.”

Bob contacted Prochem for advice and, following site visits to its Norwich and Southend depots, Prochem Sales & Training Manager Phil Jones wrote a bespoke training course for the company. Greater Anglia has Flotex FR floor coverings fitted to most of its fleet.

Phil contacted Forbo Flooring Systems’ Key Account Manager for the transportation industry, Bob Summers, and suggested a joint presentation to Greater Anglia. Bob agreed and two separate carpet care training presentations were prepared.

At the training event days held at Greater Anglia’s Stratford training academy, Phil and Bob organised tag-teaming with advice and instructions for cleaning technicians attending.

Phil commented: “A large piece of Flotex FR had been provided, which we let get soiled over a few weeks before taking it over to demonstrate cleaning methods on. It’s so easy to clean and maintain Flotex FR, we suggested that

delegates add to the soiling with eggs, beans, coffee, jam and flour which were liberally chucked over the carpet – great fun.”

Showing how easy it is to clean, Phil concluded: “A lot of the magic is in the technology of the Flotex FR textile as much as Prochem products. Its modern nylon 6.6 fibre resists soil and moisture absorption to a very high level and allows for easy and effective removal, especially if the area is lightly pre-treated with a traffic lane cleaner first.”

This knowledge passed on, you can indeed ‘let the train take the strain’ on the Greater Anglia network from now on.

can leave a longer drying time, which was deemed to be a possible concern.”

To meet the request for quick drying, he also demonstrated the use of S745 Procaps encapsulation detergent being applied to the carpeted area, and then merely brushed in with a PRO 35 dry and wet carpet and floor cleaner.

The encapsulation product attaches to greasy soils, dries it out and turns it into dust. This is then simply vacuumed away, perhaps the same day or next, leaving the carpet clean and dry within an hour. This proved to be exactly what the contractor was looking for.

Phil concluded: “I think the key lesson learned here is that extraction cleaning isn’t the only way to clean carpets – there are others.”
