Boosting productivity to meet hygiene expectations

Daniel Took, Head of Professional Product Marketing at Kärcher UK, looks at growing expectations surrounding cleanliness and how facility managers can improve cleaning efficiency.

Businesses are facing a renewed challenge to maintain cleanliness standards while fulfilling new requirements for customers to see ‘active’ cleaning in progress. Finding solutions that meet these increased expectations within the same timeframe, and without resulting in tremendous cost to the business, is a must.

Understanding how to meet hygiene standards whilst saving on costs, improving productivity, and boosting efficiency might seem increasingly difficult. However, working closely with an equipment supplier, such as Kärcher, can help facilities managers to meet these demands, particularly when it comes to maintaining flooring.

Floorcare is an important aspect of every facilities manager’s role. Improper treatment of flooring can result in the build-up of unwanted dirt, which can result in significant damage and affect health and safety. Working with an equipment supplier to understand your individual needs is a great way to prevent overheads, such as needing to replace flooring, which comes at a high cost.

As trained professionals in the cleaning sector, equipment suppliers understand these contributing factors. From unique cleaning methods such as PDIR, to selecting the right machine, their expertise will translate to real-time results. For instance, the PDIR cleaning method has proven to reduce the amount of dirt that enters buildings by focusing on the journey of users into the facility. With up to 94% of all dirt entering the facility through entranceways, tackling dirt outside can help prevent dirt build-up inside.

When it comes to selecting the right machine, it’s important to understand the wider business needs and individual requirements. For example, do you have multiple cleaners who work at different times of the day? Are they of different heights and builds? What surfaces are they cleaning? How often are they cleaning? Understanding these elements will help facilities managers boost productivity by ensuring they’ve matched the correct equipment to the task and the team.

If multiple cleaners are working throughout the course of the day, machines that come with pre-set modes are key to ensuring the same level of cleanliness, regardless of the

user. Scrubber dryers like the B 110 R Bp DOSE are perfect for this, as the machine comes with the Kärcher Intelligent Key system (KIK) built in.

The KIK system enables the facilities manager to lock the machine in the best position for achieving the most efficient clean. From ensuring the roller brush is correctly located, to dosing speed and squeegee placement, facilities managers can work with the equipment supplier to modify the machine to best fit their needs.

To support multiple cleaners, adjustable machines are a must as they can be re-positioned to ensure the most comfortable cleaning position for various staff members, regardless of their height or build. It’s important to factor in adjustable equipment when working with a range of staff as maintaining the correct posture can ensure longer, fatigue- free work intervals. By preventing injury and reducing downtime, cleaning productivity can be greatly increased.

Another important aspect to consider is the surface being cleaned. Whilst larger equipment such as scrubber dryers may work for open spaces, handheld equipment is often crucial to supporting active cleaning. As facility users want to see cleaning in action, it’s important to utilise new technological advancements, such as battery power. Battery-powered equipment, including wet and dry vacuums, sanitisers, and compact scrubber dryers, enable facilities managers to work efficiently without causing disruption. The lack of wires prevents any trip hazards for passers-by, enabling active floorcare maintenance in the workplace.

When it comes to boosting productivity and improving the efficiency of floorcare maintenance, working with equipment suppliers is the best way to understand what processes should be implemented and whether the equipment being used is the most efficient to tackle the task at hand.
