Saying no to norovirus

Winter vomiting bug case numbers have reached higher levels than expected. Joanne Gilliard, Jangro CEO, advises how to prepare your business to beat the bugs – and, should the worst happen, how to clean up afterwards.

Norovirus has been causing havoc across much of the UK this winter. A recent report revealed that the number of cases in the second half of 2019 was almost a quarter higher compared to the average for the same period over the last five years. With almost 3000 cases reported, it’s vital that businesses make a dedicated effort to keep their facilities hygienically clean.

After all, norovirus (more commonly known as the ‘winter vomiting bug’) is bad for business – whatever industry you are in. The rate and ease at which it spreads can have a significant impact on the workforce, causing increased absenteeism, directly impacting on productivity.

In healthcare settings, an outbreak can put already vulnerable patients in danger and even force the closure of wards. Whilst for hospitality, leisure, or catering establishments, widespread illness can dent their reputations, especially in today’s social-media driven world where complaints and gripes are aired freely and widely.

The fact is, no business can avoid the risk of such seasonal infections. As well as directly catching norovirus through close contact with someone who has it, you can also contract it indirectly, by touching surfaces or objects that have the virus on them, then touching your mouth. You can also catch it by eating food that's been prepared or handled by someone with norovirus.

Prevent its spread

First and foremost, washing hands frequently with soap and water is the very best way to stop the spread of norovirus. Businesses must therefore pay attention to the facilities they offer, in particular the washrooms for guest, customer and staff use. As well as ensuring that all equipment is in good working order, regular checks must be made so that soap, sanitising or paper dispensers do not run empty. For HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants and


Catering) businesses, there must also be adequate hand washing facilities available for kitchen and waiting staff, who should be using these diligently.
