DON’T REPLACE It’s now easier than ever to transform tired resilient floors – with signific

Repairs made to original worn surface

Sports flooring specialists Biddle Sport Ltd recently renovated a vinyl sports floor at Bishops Walsh Catholic School, Sutton Coldfield, using the new Bona Floor Care Program. The renovation represented a saving of around 50% against the cost of a new floor. The program was developed by wood and other hard floor experts Bona, to enable the transformation of any resilient floor in less than half the time it would take to replace the floorcovering − with minimal disturbance to the rest of a facility.

Mostly used in large facilities such as retail stores, sports centres, healthcare settings, schools or large commercial buildings, resilient flooring is comprised of sheet vinyl, LVT, linoleum and rubber floors. Resilient material is highly durable and can withstand a great deal of foot traffic and general use.

When resilient flooring becomes dull, slippery or damaged, most facilities either polish or replace the flooring. Polishing resilient flooring is a simple process yet it is labour and time intensive. Additionally, the area must be closed to foot traffic and often the surrounding area is unusable due to the smell and compromised air quality inherent in the stripping and polishing process. The other option for facilities is full replacement – an expensive and time-consuming exercise. And, while many manufacturers have implemented recycling schemes, a significant amount of resilient flooring still ends up in landfills.

Deep Cleaning the surface

Bona’s resilient floor renovation process begins with an initial prep phase of wet abrading the floor and then, if needed, stripping the surface to remove the old polish, similar to standard polish removal processes. The floor is thoroughly cleaned and then a single coat of base colour is applied. Colour chips can be sprinkled on while the base colour is still wet. The floor is completed with a clear finish to ensure durability and protection of the base colour and colour chips.

After the first system application of this new process, the facility can forgo any future stripping and polishing. While the system requires an initial investment, it is greatly outweighed by the long-term benefit of minimised facility downtime (often cutting downtime by more than 50%), less labour costs for polish upkeep and extended life of the resilient surface.

At Bishops Walsh Catholic School, the Bona Technical team provided support and guidance to Biddle Sport as it was the first time they had used the Bona system. Working in partnership ensured a perfect result and the floor renovation was completed in just five days.

After working through each process of deep cleaning, wet sanding with Bona Diamond abrasives, removing the sanded slurry from the floor and then neutralising with clean water, the surface was ready for the first coat of Bona Pure Colour to the centre section of the floor. A second colour was applied around the outer section. Two coats of each colour
