MAKEOVER OF THE MONTH
SCHOOL SUCCESS
When contractors were tasked with fitting wide- ranging floorcoverings for a new-build secondary school in Newcastle, they turned to Mapei.
Specialist Mapei preparation and adhesive products have been used, by Active Flooring Solutions Ltd, to complete an extensive flooring project at Great Park Academy in Newcastle. Part of the Gosforth Group Multi Academy Trust, Great Park Academy’s new building spans over 8,500 m². The installation included classrooms, sports halls, corridors and washrooms, and featured Altro and Heckmondwike designs and Junckers wood flooring. The project was delivered by Galliford Try’s Building North East and Yorkshire business unit.
Arranged across three storeys, Great Park Academy provides 1200 secondary school places to pupils from years 5-11. The building’s flexible learning spaces include sports, music, art and drama facilities, a learning resource centre, suite of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities support spaces and external play, learning and multi-use games area.

During floor preparations, cement subfloors were primed with ECO Prim T Plus and Mapeproof One Coat epoxy damp proof membrane was applied to control moisture. Latexplan Trade was used to smooth the surfaces.
Two Mapei adhesives were used to install the floorcoverings, which included Altro slip-resistant vinyl, wood-effect and safety flooring and Heckmondwike carpet tiles. They included Ultrabond ECO V4 Evolution all-in-one universal adhesive for the vinyl and Ultrabond ECO Tack TX+ carpet tile tackifier. Ultrabond ECO V4 Evolution was also used to install PVC coving and skirting. All products, along with the Mapei primer and smoothing compound, benefit from very low VOC EMICODE EC1 PLUS certified formulations which promoted a safe, comfortable application for the Active Flooring team.
Floorcoverings installed included Altro Walkway 20, Altro Aquarius in colour Hippo, Altro Wood in colour Oak Traditions, Altro Classic 25, Altro Reliance in colour Storm, Heckmondwike Array Emerald Carpet Tiles and Junckers SylvaSport Club fitted over New Era battens.
