10 QUESTIONS WITH…

Each issue, we ask a flooring industry professional 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Jason Crump, General Manager Product Brands, Headlam Group.

visionary entrepreneur, disruptor, and brand builder of his generation: PayPal, Space X, Tesla – he has such a brilliant mind.

Q5

What’s the best advice you could give to

someone new coming into

the industry? This is a very close-knit industry so be humble and respect the past whilst steadfastly implementing your plans for the future.

Q6 Q1

What was your first job? It was as a Unigate teenage

milk round assistant on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings, the money I earned was all wasted on my lifelong guilty pleasure: West Bromwich Albion.

Q2

How did you get into the industry?

Through family connections at Tomkinson’s Carpets in Kidderminster many years ago. It was only supposed to be a short-term assignment whilst I was waiting to join the forces, but I had to cancel my selection centre place due to a sports injury and the rest as they say is history. Ironically, one of the brands in our portfolio today is Mr Tomkinson so it has come full circle.

Q3 Q4

What has been your proudest moment?

It is impossible to single out any one moment but all three of my children and the way they approach life and their respective achievements. They all have different attributes and have so far managed to fully maximise their individual potential.

If you could hire anyone to be part of your team,

who would it be and why? Elon Musk as he is the most incredible

What’s the first thing you’d buy if you won

the lottery? As a family, one of our happiest places is Fowey, Cornwall, and especially boating in those waters. So, in the unlikely event of that happening, I would buy a large waterside property there with an integrated boat house and be very happy.

Q7

If you could have a dinner party with any

three people, dead or alive, who

would you choose and why? Ricky Gervais for his incredible wit and view of the world around us, he would light up any dinner party, I am sure. Alistair Campbell for his political stories and strategic mindset, and my late father for one last drink and chat, even if he

would miss most of the conversation due to being hard of hearing.

Q8

What did you want to be when you were

growing up? I wanted to be a secret agent, Royal Marine or professional footballer so absolutely missed the mark. No regrets though, I love my job.

Q9

What do you think the future holds for flooring?

Plenty of change. Like all industries it will need to advance technologically and proactively take collective responsibility for sustainability and in particular the recycling of end-of-life materials

Q10

Steve Birch, Managing Director,

ADP Distribution asked: “If there was one element of your personality you could change,

what would it be and why?” Apparently, according to my family, I’m not very relaxing to be around as I always have to be doing something, so maybe just be a little more chilled and laid back.
