How did you get into the industry?
I was presented with the opportunity to use my technical drawing skills to design and develop equipment, which we manufacture at our Lincoln HQ. I gained invaluable knowledge at the sharp end operating machines in the formative years of PPC; the contracting division of The Preparation Group.
What do you think are the positives and
negatives of the flooring trade? On the positive side there is an infinite range of flooring systems that are now available to architects and specifiers. A negative is that often when investing in high value finishes, little attention is afforded to specifying the correct and most cost-effective preparation solution for the background surface on which the flooring system is being applied.

If you could hire any one person to be part
of your team, who would it be
and why? Someone better than me, to inspire innovate and drive the industry forward.

What’s the best advice you could give to
someone new coming into
the industry? Be honest, be professional and true to your values no matter who you deal with and meet. Work hard and take every opportunity to improve your skills and knowledge, as you never stop learning. Finally, don’t cut corners.

If you could invent any product what would it
be and why? A robot to do all the DIY and household chores, leaving me with more leisure time to enjoy.

If you could have a dinner party with any
three people, dead or alive, who
would they be and why? Architect, Richard Rogers, as I’ve been in awe of his design innovations from an early age. James Bond, who wouldn’t want to be this fictional hero? And finally, Reeves and Mortimer for the entertainment because they epitomise the north-east humour from where I grew up.

What was your first job? I started out as an
What do you think the future holds for
flooring design? Flooring design and finishes constantly evolve with different trends, fashion and innovations. But if you do not prepare the background surface correctly whichever product you select can fail. This is why guidance on how to correctly maintain and clean is vital. In some areas, more information and training is essential to realise the lifespan and durability of specified flooring. This is a key factor for our technical support team supporting manufactures, specifiers and end users.

What would you like to see in a future issue of
Tomorrow’s Contract Floors? A technical forum involving contributors and advertisers to the publication. This would provide information on techniques, common pitfalls, the correct tools to use and guidance on specifying the correct flooring systems for specific environments.

asked: What impact has the emergence and continuing growth in popularity of underfloor heating had on your
business or industry? When underfloor heating is correctly installed it does not present a problem. However, when the underfloor heating fails, the finished floor and screed needs to be removed to repair or replace the heating system. This is costly and disruptive to the customer. We have the equipment, tools and accessories and services to tackle such issues but it obviously highlights the importance of getting the job right first time.
