CHRISTIE’S Masterpieces of Cizhou Ware: The Linyushanren
Collection Part IV Thursday, 13 September, 10am, 41 lots, $573,000-822,000
Te fourth in the series of sales of this Japanese collection of Song ceramics (the first was in Hong Kong in December 2015, the second and third in New York in September 2016 and March 2018) is composed of Cizhou wares alone. Although not as star- studded as the previous
iterations,
this sale offers examples of every type and motif of cizhou with pieces ranging from $3,000 to $100,000. Te large size of a Jin-dynasty (1115- 1234), sgraffiato sawtooth jar once owned by renowned Japanese scholar Fujio Koyama (1900-1975) is what makes it so uncommon. It was published several times in Japan first in 1954 (est $100/150,000). However, one of the rarest pieces is a large cizhou truncated meiping painted with one peony spray and two leaf sprays – there is only one other with the exact same motif (est $60/80,000).
The Zuo Bao Yi Gui Thursday, 13 September, 11am, Unpublished Estimate
CHRISTIE’S Qianlong’s Precious Vessel
Te Zuo Bao Yi Gui is an early Western Zhou dynasty, 11th/10th- century BC, bronze,
legged food vessel of great rarity and extraordinary provenance and the
only lot in the sale. Te gui was not only one of the most prized in Qianlong’s private collection, but it was also in the Wu Dacheng (1835- 1902) Collection, who was a noted collector in China. Later it was at CT Loo & Co, New York by 1940, then in the Edward T Chow (1910- 1980) Collection and sold at Sotheby’s London, 16 December 1980 (lot 338) to Eskenazi Ltd, and subsequently in the Bella and PP Chiu Collection. In addition to having a beautiful patina, it is one of only a handful of vessels of this shape on raised legs made during this period – most of the others are in museums – and so of tremendous art- historical importance. Te inscription on the inside ‘Making precious vessel’ implies that the gui was accorded special status at the time it was produced. Te estimate is unpublished, but it
is expected to bring in the region of $4 million.

CHRISTIE’S Fine Chinese Jade Carvings from
It has been some time since a sale in these rooms was devoted exclusively to jades, but the last one was successful. Te jades range in date from Neolithic to Qing dynasty, with the focus on Song and later and are from five private collections.
Four of the

ritual four-
