The Skies Above My Eyes

The unique concertina format of this book captures the imagination as it inspires us to look up and up and up through the many layers of our atmo- sphere: those we can see and those we can’t. Charlotte Gullain’s words and Yuval Zommer’s illustrations take us on a journey looking skyward from city streets and human-made objects into outer space and back through na-

ture’s wonders to a grassy knoll. It is an awesome way to gain some perspective on the world we live in. The Skies Above My Eyes is brimming with fun facts and tidbits of information perfect for a young child in the primary grades. When opening the book in full, it reaches about eight feet, fully illustrated on both sides. I can imagine this book motivating a community walk where students spend time looking up and finding all that’s there to see and wonder about. – (VU)

Bees in the City

There is much written in the news about declining bee populations around the world. Bees in the City shares the story of a young boy in Paris who comes up with an idea to move his aunt’s suffering beehive from the country to the city to help the bees survive. As the afterword about honeybees and urban beekeeping describes, this resur- gence of urban beekeeping is thriving throughout both Europe and America because of the diversity of plants and warmer urban climates. Celebrat- ing the power of youth to make change, author Andrea Cheng has young Lionel and his friends spring into action in this story as they go through the steps to gain assent from the other tenants and landlord to allow the beehive. The playful illustrations of Sarah McMenemy create a vibrant

energy in keeping with the story, while also making a perhaps-heavy topic light. This book would be suitable for grade 2–5 and used as a catalyst for the exploration of urban beekeeping and pollinator gardens within the com- munity or school grounds. – (VU)
