Electric vehicles (EVs) have long been hailed as one of the major technologies that will help bring about the decarbonisation of the transport sector. The so-called ‘EV revolution’ has prompted new legislation and promises from governments around the world to phase out the sale of diesel and petrol vehicles in favour of electric models. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) this ‘revolution’ is continuing to gather pace, with global electric car sales breaking new records in 2022 to exceed 10 million. This momentum is expected to continue throughout 2023, with the IEA predicting 35% year-on-year increase in sales of EVs by the end of the year. This issue of International Transport Manufacturer takes a deep dive into the new innovations and technological advances currently happening in the EV market, from more efficient methods of battery manufacturing (pages 15-16) to the use of simulation to improve the sustainability of commercial and industrial EVs (18-19). Continuing with the theme of battery innovation, we look at the role lithium-sulfur batteries can play in opening up new performance gains for EVs of the future (24-25), how battery management systems can determine long-term reliability (30-31), and new innovations in sensors that can detect the early signs of battery failures (36-38). Aside from EVs, this issue’s cover story (6-7) explores how a data-led approach to digital twins is enabling one aeroengine manufacturer to revolutionise its MRO operations, and we preview the must-visit events and conferences for the transport sector taking place over the summer and beyond.
