POWERTRAIN

POWERTRAIN PARTNERSHIP FOR PROGRESS

A new technology-focused joint venture agreement is set to accelerate the development of next-generation hybrid and effi cient powertrain solutions

S

ynthetic fuels, including e-fuels, and hydrogen have been singled out as part of the solution for decarbonisation

within the automotive industry. Including for the internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles currently on the road today. To support the ongoing research and development in this area, French car manufacturer Renault Group and Chinese automaker Geely Auto Group have entered into a joint venture agreement to launch a new powertrain technology company that aims to develop, manufacture and supply best-

in-class hybrid powertrains and highly eff icient ICE powertrains. Having secured funding from

petroleum and natural gas company Aramco, the company will conduct research into synthetic fuels and next-gen hydrogen technologies that could signifi cantly improve the eff iciency of hybrid and ICE powertrains of the future. The new company

will include 17 engine plants and fi ve research and development centres in three continents. Employing some 19,000 employees, the business will be structure to provide powertrain solutions for multiple OEMs across the globe. Going forwards, the fi rm aims to achieve an annual production capacity up to fi ve million ICE, hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines and transmissions per year. Taking into account the joint venture’s product portfolio and regional footprint, the company could potentially off er solutions for 80% of the global ICE and hybrid market. At launch, the company is expected

to supply multiple industrial customers including Renault Group, Geely Auto, Volvo Cars, Proton, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Punch Torino.
