Annual Guide 2021 I SOURCE TESTING ASSOCIATION
Chairman’s introduction to the 2021 STA Annual Guide
Welcome to the STA’s 2021 Annual Guide. I hope you fi nd the guide a useful reference document. Most importantly, I hope that all of you, your families, friends and colleagues are safe and well during these unusual times.
2020 has proved to be an unprecedented year. Many new words have entered the lexicon: pandemic, social distancing, lockdown and furlough. The STA, the stack testing community and operators have all inevitably been affected by these events to some degree. I am truly heartened by the resilience shown by the STA and its members in their determination to get through this and face a brighter future together. We have adapted to the new normal and it was wonderful to see so many of you attend the online General Meeting in June. We will continue to hold online meetings for the foreseeable future and I look forward to the time when we can once more squeeze into a room in Hitchin and talk to one another face-to-face over a sandwich and a kit-kat.

The STA exists to serve the interests of its diverse membership. We have, over the past 20+ years, played a crucial role in the evolution of emissions monitoring in the UK by bringing together operators, regulators, test houses, equipment suppliers, consultants, and certifi cation bodies. EU Directives, Best Available Techniques and CEN standards continue to provide the foundations for our industry. As Brexit enters its fi nal stages, whatever form it fi nally takes, the UK will continue to adopt the strictest standards for environmental compliance, emissions monitoring, and environmental testing. Brexit will therefore almost certainly bring forward as many opportunities as well as challenges in the long-term. The STA will be important in supporting the technical and regulatory future of emissions monitoring and management in the UK and beyond.
If you are a member of the STA, I would like to thank you for your continued support. Any assistance you are able to offer in helping us navigate the next 12 months would be welcomed, whether that is by contributing to technical debates, volunteering for roles, recommending the STA to peers or attending meetings and training.
If you are not currently a member of the STA, I would encourage you to join. For a very modest annual fee, your organisation will have the benefi ts of: discounted specialist training; access to a wide ranging support network including free telephone advice; and participating in the development of standards and regulatory guidance documents.
I would like to offer our Past Chair, Mark Elliott, my heartfelt thanks for his unstinting efforts in steering the STA over the last 2 years. Thanks are due too to Samantha Harvey, Andy Curtis and Simon Medhurst for their resilience in maintaining STA’s support to its members though trying times.
Best wishes to all of you. Stewart Davies Chair STA Chair Stewart Davies, Viridor
