Innovative vortex mixer transforms laboratory experience

Starlab, the Hamburg-based laboratory products manufacturer, continues to revolutionise the laboratory market with the upcoming launch of its latest product, the Starlab Vortex Mixer. Following the successful introduction of the Starlab Minicentrifuge 18 months ago, this new vortex mixer combines cutting-edge design, exceptional performance, and user-friendly features.

Designed to elevate day-to-day lab work, the Starlab Vortex Mixer is set to debut on 05 March 2024, with a retail price of 350.00 GBP. Klaus Ambos, President & CEO of Starlab International, expressed pride in introducing another crucial product for next-generation laboratories. Ambos emphasised the company’s commitment to infusing enjoyment into lab work, believing that passion and performance are essential for successful research.

Building on the success of the Minicentrifuge, the Vortex Mixer showcases Starlab’s distinctive curved design, characterised by a fluid and visually striking wave pattern and a two-tone colour scheme. Ambos highlighted that the design goes beyond aesthetics; it encourages active interaction and ensures intuitive handling for laboratory staff.

The Vortex Mixer focuses on user-friendliness, featuring an intuitive glove-compatible touchscreen interface. The interface simplifies speed and time adjustments, offering pre-set options for quick selection. Customised settings are also available, and the mixer incorporates an energy-saving sleep mode to reduce energy consumption during periods of inactivity.

Versatility is a key feature, with a speed range from 300 rpm to 3500 rpm in touch mode, accommodating various laboratory requirements. The large surface area allows vortexing of differently shaped tubes and containers, and optional adapters enable continuous mixing of tubes or a microplate within a range of 300 rpm to 1500 rpm. The Vortex Mixer operates quietly, ensuring a disturbance-free working environment, while anti-slip feet provide stability and safety during operation.

Klaus Ambos expressed confidence in the Vortex Mixer, stating: “From gentle sample mixing to vigorous vortexing, the Starlab Vortex Mixer brings good vibes to every lab with its compact and innovative design. Good vibrations. Great results!”

Technical specifications of the Starlab Vortex Mixer include a speed range from 300 rpm to 3,500 rpm, touch and continuous operating modes, and noise levels of ≤55 dBA. The mixer is equipped with USB output, timing capacity from 1 second to 99:59 minutes, and an orbital movement type.

The ashing test on food samples is commonly used for evaluation of mineral content because this content plays an important role from a physicochemical and nutritional point of view. Ash content analysis is also an accepted index of refinement of foods, such as wheat flour or sugar production since the ash test is a reliable indicator of efficiency of which the separation of bran and germ from the rest of the wheat kernel. Mineral constituents include potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium that are often present in larger amounts as well as smaller quantities of aluminium, iron, copper, manganese, arsenic, zinc, arsenic, iodine, and fluorine.

Traditional ashing methods for food samples have used electrical muffle furnaces that have disadvantages such as long ashing times, extended cooling, and high power consumption. An alternative and rapid ashing method for determination of mineral content in food samples using an enhanced microwave system is available from Analytix. The Milestone PYRO system incorporates all the benefits of using microwaves and working with specially developed fast heating/cooling crucibles makes the ashing application fast, easy, and efficient, coupled with complete safety with all fumes produced during the process diverted away from the user.

An application report highlighting the advantages of a microwave enhanced ashing system is available that demonstrates the recoveries of a certified food standard material being in compliance with the certificate value plus the reproducibility of the method due to temperature homogeneity across the muffle. In addition, the speed advantages are also highlighted due to the accelerated ashing from a constant airflow across all samples, a one-step method, and the cooling of the crucibles post processing from 1000°C to room temperature in under 30 seconds using the Milestone ultrafast crucibles.
