AIR MONITORING
Tackling the challenge of accurately measuring Biogenic CO2
Reliable CEMS solutions customised to meet specific needs
For over 20 years, Cubic Instruments has specialised in the gas analysis industry, offering a wide range of technologies including NDIR, UV-DOAS, NDUV, GFC, TDLAS and Paramagnetic, to meet various regulatory requirements and measurement challenges.
Their CEMS is designed to measure the SOx CH4, N2
O, NH3 , HCL, HF and O2 , NOx , CO, CO2
of operational conditions and capable of meeting diverse customer needs.
ENVEA, a leading provider of environmental management solutions, has developed a new tool to calculate potential cost savings by accurately measuring biogenic CO2
in Waste-to-Energy (WtE). Biogenic CO2 is carbon dioxide released from sources like
plants and animals. As part of the natural carbon cycle, it can be deducted from reported emissions leading to savings through carbon credits when WtE falls under the Emissions Trading Scheme in 2028, and any regional carbon tax schemes.
Jürgen Reinmann, Regulatory Director said: “Measuring biogenic CO2
emissions is essential for complying with
regulations and global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide greenhouse gases. Operators often face several challenges in accurately reporting biogenic CO2
cost savings.” emissions, which is why
ENVEA has developed a calculator tool to help them estimate potential biogenic CO2
The unique calculator is free to use and provides users with an estimate of their potential cost savings. By inputting data including total tonnes of waste per year, currency, market price for biogenic CO2
per tonne and the percentage of
biogenic content in the waste, customers can click calculate and the estimated cost savings results will appear instantly.
The AMESA-B smart sampler is the turn-key solution to accurate biogenic CO2
reporting and to help meet regulations.
It eliminates guesswork in carbon dioxide greenhouse monitoring through the flue gas sampling, and fulfils the requirements of EN ISO 13833 standards, resulting in unmatched accuracy and traceability.
With easy integration into existing systems, it also includes pre- and post-sampling leak checks for precise sample flow and fail-safe oversaturation. It also integrates with the plant’s wider sensor network to ensure precise data collection.
The cost savings calculator can be accessed here with further information about a free consultation on the AMESA-B available here.

Data-centralised CEMS monitoring
Advanced Sterilization Technology Inc. (AST) has selected Picarro Inc. to provide a comprehensive solution that facilitates the recycling, and reuse of ethylene oxide (EtO) while ensuring compliance with stringent emissions regulations. The AST BOAZ cryogenic abatement and reclamation system captures and converts gaseous EtO back into 100% liquid EtO, while Picarro’s advanced systems monitor emissions in and around sterilisation facilities. Together, these technologies support effective emissions control and regulatory compliance.
The BOAZ system has operated at four pallet sterilisers in Taiwan for over two years and has demonstrated a 90% recovery rate of gaseous EtO. This efficiency level translates into substantial financial savings, reducing capital equipment costs, operating expenses, and overall EtO emissions control expenditures. Denny Christensen, CEO of AST’s newly established U.S. sales operations, emphasised the impact of this technological amalgamation, “By integrating Picarro’s ultra-sensitive EtO monitoring systems with our BOAZ, we can give mutual customers additional confidence in their ability to streamline process optimisation and compliance.”
With globally increasing regulatory scrutiny and evolving emissions control requirements, in this case under US EPA’s National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), the sterilisation industry must adopt advanced emissions management solutions. By integrating Picarro’s industrial VOC monitoring technology, AST is driving much-needed innovation in the sterilisation sector, providing reliable solutions to meet emerging regulatory challenges.
The iLotusLand for Environment Platform is a data- centralized solution that enables industries and government agencies to remotely monitor all CEMS, AAQMS and water and wastewater stations through a single dashboard on both web and mobile apps.
With real-time data readily accessible, users can optimize operations by utilizing key features such as real-time monitoring, alerts and notifications, camera integration, and periodic monitoring. The system also provides user access control, reporting, and the ability to store documents and photos. Additionally, it supports API integration and offers features like AQI/WQI. Furthermore, the system allows for data hosting on the client’s server rather than a public server, ensuring enhanced data security.

The AST BOAZ system presents multiple advantages for facilities using pure EtO for medical device sterilisation. By recovering 90% of the EtO gas from sterilisation processes, the system significantly reduces the overall cost of EtO usage and capital equipment for emissions control. Reducing daily operational costs associated with emissions control further enhances the system’s economic viability. Additionally, the dramatic decrease in EtO emissions alters the regulatory landscape for compliance with (EPA and other) global standards, reducing environmental impact and operational burdens for sterilisation providers.
Picarro’s suite of EtO emissions management solutions complements AST’s technological advancements, allowing sterilisation operators to prioritise their core business activities while ensuring regulatory compliance. Picarro provides exact, interference-free detection, analysis, and reporting of EtO emissions through workplace, fenceline, and Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS). The company also offers expert regulatory guidance, helping facilities navigate the ever-evolving legal requirements. End- to-end support services mitigate operational risks, prevent costly downtime, and ensure sterilisation facilities constantly adhere to emissions regulations.
As global demand for effective and sustainable sterilisation solutions grows, the collaboration between Picarro and AST represents a significant step forward in addressing environmental and regulatory challenges. Integrating BOAZ and Picarro technologies offers a streamlined approach to EtO emissions management, enabling global sterilisation providers to meet current and future compliance requirements efficiently and effectively.
