SPIRITS OF THE GAME By AZ Golf Insider Staff

< American classic You don’t need thoroughbreds or Kentucky blue grass to enjoy one of this season’s great cocktails: the mint julep. Typically associated with the Kentucky Derby, the mint- and Bourbon-based drink also refreshes after 18 holes with your weekly foursome. Call for top-shelf Maker’s Mark or Knob Creek if bellying up at your favorite 19th

hole, or follow this easy recipe at home.

MINT JULEP 2 ounces Bourbon 2 sprigs of fresh mint 1 ounce simple syrup Club soda Ice

Preparation: In old-fashioned cocktail or julep glass, muddle mint and simple syrup, add Bourbon and fill with ice. Top with club soda.

> Pinot Noir rules Images of the Salinas River in Monterey County, Calif., and an idyllic Burgundian landscape add to the distinct terroir of Metz Road 2015 estate-grown Pinot Noir. Winemaker Dave Nagengast compares the region and growing conditions to fabled French counterparts and creates some of the top Pinot Noir in the Golden State. Aromas of ripe cherries and blood orange intermingle with subtle vanilla and butterscotch notes. The wine is silky, elegant and supremely balanced between fruit and tannins.

> White wine option We can’t live on red wines alone this season, not to mention that Chardonnay naturally pairs well with lighter fare and 19th

hole appetizers. So swirl,

sniff and sip Harken’s 2016 barrel-fermented Chardonnay from California’s Arroyo Seco region of Salinas Valley. It exhibits a rich, classic profile of tropical fruit, Bosc pear and warm oak overtones. Fresh acidity complements butter-creme brulee notes.

> Caribbean influence Much like the mint julep, the humble mojito speaks to the season with fresh herbs, citrus and zesty rum as its primary influences. It’s perfect for post-round drinks at home or the clubhouse. Mojitos also are good drinks to make ahead of time in a large pitcher, so your group can concentrate on settling bets and having fun. Again, seek higher-end Caribbean rums such as Clement, Havana Club and, of course, Bacardi.

MOJITO 2 ounces rum 2 sprigs fresh mint 1 lime, quartered 1 ounce simple syrup Club soda Ice

Preparation: In a high-ball or collins glass, muddle mint, lime and simple syrup. Add rum, fill glass with ice and top with club soda.
