JUNIOR GOLF

Bubba, Fitz make ‘Dream’ come true for First Tee kids

T

he Thunderbirds — the civic group that hosts of the Waste Management Phoenix Open — have long-supported The

First Tee of Phoenix, and one way they make an impact on the local youth golf scene is the R.S. Hoyt Jr. Family Foundation Dream Day. The annual event, which routinely draws hundreds of Valley elementary school students, took place on in late January on TPC Scottsdale’s Champions Course during tournament week for the PGA Tour event. Dream Day is all about

introducing the game of golf to youngsters outside of their regular school programming, and providing inspiration, hope and courage to Maricopa County students in a fun and inclusive environment. During Dream Day, students take part in a junior golf clinic, marvel in a trick-shot golf show and even got a chance to see a few celebrities. This year, perennial NFL All-Pro Larry

Fitzgerald and PGA Tour standout/two- time Masters champion Bubba Watson were on hand to join in on the fun. “To see the smile on their face,

I mean, that’s like us,” Watson said. “When we hit a good shot we get a smile on our face. So, we all enjoy it no matter what level you’re at.” Interested in joining The First Tee of

Phoenix? The program has an annual fee of $100, which covers all instruction and access to the facility where you plan on attending classes. The year is divided into four sessions which will implement the First

Tee Life Skills Experience that is part of a nationally recognized character development curriculum. Membership scholarships are available, and are awarded on a case-by-case method based by individual need. The First Tee of Phoenix also accepts membership and equipment donations, and can be reached at www.thefirstteeofphoenix.org. n
