2 We’ve heard that Amy wears the golfing pants in the family. How do your games compare?

only plays about once a year and she is still so consistent and so precise. I guess when you go to college on a golf scholarship, you’re going to be pretty good at it, and it shows. Sometimes it’s a little frustrating when I play with her because she is dang good. I try to play and practice and I still can’t come close to what she does, at least not yet. Maybe when my baseball career is over, I’ll have more time to devote to it and I’ll become a decent golfer.

3 What is it like playing golf with your teammates? Unlike me, we have some pretty good golfers. Tuffy

(Gosewich) is really good and some of the pitchers

also play pretty well. The big thing is smack talk. There’s a lot of that stuff going on. We try to get together and play quite a bit but it’s really hard during the season unless you’re a pitcher. Pitchers have a lot more time for it. The best is spring training because there are a lot of players who get to come to warm weather, which they really look forward to and they take advantage of it while they’re here.

4 We haven’t seen you in the celebrity pro-am portion of the Waste Management Phoenix Open yet. Is that in your future?

Oh boy, I don’t think I’m ready for that yet. I would

probably hurt someone and that would be awful. It would be fun but I really don’t trust myself to keep my ball under control so I don’t nail anyone with a bad shot. It would be a blast to play the 16th hole. I think I would have a lot of fun playing in it. I just know how bad I would feel if I hit a ball into the gallery and hurt someone. But it looks like a great setting and I’m sure it would be fun to play that hole. That would be the highlight of the round.

5 Where do you like to play in the Valley? My personal favorite is Grayhawk. If you’re talking

about public golf, they have two great courses

up there and they keep both of them in great condition. They give you a lot of different looks, with such a nice variety of holes, and everything they do at the course is just first class. To me, that is a great place to play golf.

6 The grounds crew might not appreciate it, but have you ever tried hitting golf balls at Chase Field from the home plate area

into the swimming pool?

No, but that would definitely be a lot of fun. I’ve seen some other baseballs stadiums set up mini golf courses or let players hit from home plate, and I think it would be pretty cool. I think the pool is about 130 yards, so it’s fairly close for a golf shot. It’s not a big target to hit, so it might take a few shots to drop one in there. I might do it on the first shot or it could be closer to 15, but I have confidence I could do it within 15 shots.

7 Speaking of baseball, what was your take on the most recent World Series?

last two or three have been really good, but this one, with a fantastic Game 7, the rain delay, Cleveland and Chicago both

www.azgolf.org That was one of the best World Series I have seen. The

trying to break the curse, when you put it all together, it was an awesome Series and great for the game of baseball. Neither team was a team you wanted to root against so it was really fun to watch. Of course, you always want to be playing in it yourself, but a World Series doesn’t get much better than that.

8 It’s fair to say the Diamondbacks’ 2016 season was disappointing. What do you see ahead for your team?

We still have an awful lot of talent here, a lot of really

good players. You know that the ownership, the front office and the coaching staff are going to do anything possible to help us get to where we need to be. I think the future is bright. I know that we as players are looking at how we can improve, how we can be better than we were last season. I really think that we have guys willing to do what we can to get in the playoffs and be in the next World Series. This organization is still pretty young in the scope of things and we have had ups and downs but when you look at the division titles and a World Series in the amount of time we have been playing, it says a lot about the organization. Our goal is to get back there and do it again, not just for ourselves but for our fans, who have been so great and continue to support us. Everybody in this organization wants to be part of another championship.

9 Off the field, you are very involved in charity work. What is your approach to helping others?

Giving back and helping charities is something my

parents taught me at an early age. I remember, going back to high school days and even before that, it’s something they always emphasized and something I really enjoyed, so when I got called up (to the major leagues) it was the natural thing to do. With the players I looked up to when I was a kid, I could see that they were involved in charitable activities and we, as pro athletes, have such a great platform to do so much good, that it really is incumbent on us to do that and set an example. We have an opportunity to have such a huge impact, and especially when I look at this community, this is home now. So any time we have a chance to do that, we need to help our community and try to make it an even better place to live than it already is. n
