WOMEN’S GOLF
Mixed events prove to be popular outings

very year the AWGA conducts a wildly popular Mixed Stix event in the summertime. The tournament is 36 holes with partners, where teams consist of one man and one woman, both of
whom must be members of either the AGA or the AWGA. This year we’ve also revived another mixed team
event, the AWGA “Weekend Classic”. Many spouses enjoy playing together in these tournaments, but partners can be friends, relatives, neighbors . . . you name it! What’s important is to play with someone you want to spend quality time with. While mixed tournaments are considered some
of the most fun on the AWGA’s yearly schedule, Rules Committee chair Lyman Gallup says men shouldn’t mistake them for “hit and giggle” events. Gallup knows first-hand that AWGA members think about golf in the same way men do, and are just as concerned with both playing well and having fun. So if you want to give one our events a try, we’d love
to have you! If the woman you have in mind to play with is already a member then get them ready for one of the

events below. If not, there’s a quick fix. You can call either the AWGA (602-253-5655) or the AGA (602-944- 3035) and we’ll help you get them up and running. If you don’t know someone who plays, we can help with that, too. Just call us and we can help find you a partner. The AWGA “Weekend Classic” is being played at Seville Golf & Country Club in Gilbert on May 20. Registration is $60 per person and is open from April 7-28. This year’s “Mixed Stix” tournament will be played July 22-23 at Oakcreek Country Club in Sedona.
Registration is $170 per person and will open June 9. The format of both events is four-ball stroke
play. While some couples who play mixed events might prefer the Chapman method of play, where each partner strikes the same ball, playing a better ball of partners will allow you to post your score when play is complete. the LPGA Foundation, said, “We chose the Phoenix area as a host this year because we have such a robust Girls Golf presence in Arizona. The Phoenix market is a great place to showcase what the local programs have to offer.” The Girls Golf national academies
offer instruction to all golf abilities and focus on developing skills through the Five E’s of Girls Golf — exercise, energize, empower, engage and enrich. Ashley Moss, founder
of Born2Golf and LPGA Teaching Professional at Mesa Country Club, will be part of our Arizona Academy teaching team. Moss believes that “passion in golf starts with a reason to love the game that has given me so much.” Moss is excited to share that passion and impact these young women. Moss will
join three to four other instructors to create a strong teaching team. Girls Golf has offered these national
initiatives in only the Carolinas for the last five years. Phoenix girls have traveled East for those opportunities, and when they do, they come back enriched. With skill building, self-development and even some social time (hey, it’s girls), these participants are sure to leave feeling energized.
