Often, I have tried to decide which hymns and songs are my favourites - this has been very difficult, there are thousands to choose from! Some very old hymns are cherished and listening to UCB 2 radio station reveals pop- style musical settings of prose and poetry. There are many instances of songs and singing mentioned in the Bible, most notably the Psalms.

Psalm 81 For the director of music. According to Gittith. Of Asaph.

1 Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob!

2 Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre.

3 Sound the ram’s horn at the New Moon, and when the moon is full, on the day of our festival. (NIV)

What is a ‘gittith’ you may ask? The gittith, in titles to Psalms 8, 81, 84, was a stringed instrument, probably found by David at Gath; it is sometimes called the ‘Gittith of Gath’.

Psalm 8 begins with an invocation to play a particular instrument: "To the conductor, on the Gittith, a song of David.”
