News Combine harvester fire warning issued ahead of summer A
fire prevention checklist has been issued by NFU Mutual to help reduce the risk of combine harvesters going up in flames this summer. With harvest around the cor-
ner, the rural insurer is urging farmers to think prevention, peo- ple, plans and place to reduce the risk of a fire. It has also introduced discounts on insurance for farm- ers fitting a fire suppression kit to their combine harester. “Fire remains one of the great- est risks to lives and property,” said Andy Manson, managing director of NFU Mutual risk management services. “As well as taking preventative steps and regular maintenance to reduce the risks we’re urging farmers to share their fire plan with everyone on farm, as well as ensuring emergency services can find your location easily by using the What3Words app.
More than 80 combine harvester fires happen every year
Last year NFU Mutual dealt with more than 80 combine har- vester fires. Behind the figures is the devastation to lives and prop- erty, disruption to harvest and dif- ficulty finding replacement ma- chines at a busy time of year. Mr Manson added: “Suppres- sion systems are one of the most ef- fective ways you can protect your- self, your combine and the harvest. When an engine bay catches fire, the systems rapidly detect, con- tain and extinguish fire.”
