An Introduction to the ORHyA Varsity Team The Ontario Reining Horse Youth

Association Varsity team is comprised of youth members up to the age of 18. Dur- ing the 2020 season there was five very active and dedicated members of the youth team. These members completed nearly 180 volunteer hours between them and through their fundraising efforts raised an amazing $650 in just three rein- ing shows. Their volunteer hours are earned by working the gate at shows, hosting their fundraising events and lend- ing a hand in any other way over a show weekend. The proceeds from the fundraising events they host help with the scholarship awards presented at the end of the year, as well as other fun activities in and out of the show pen. These fundraising events include anything from 50/50 draws, bake sales and their favourite event...the stick horse reining competition! There are four scholarship awards

presented every year. Two are volunteer based, the Jr and Sr varsity awards,

awarded to the member under 13 and over 14 who complete the most volunteer hours. The other two awards are peer voted: Most Improved Youth and the Sportsmanship award.

Congratulation to the 2020 award recipients.

Jr Varsity Award - Ella Kendall Sr. Varsity Award - Brooklyn Breedon Most Improved - Caelin Collyer Sportsmanship Award - Landon Brown The youth team is already hard at

work discussing possible fundraising events for this coming show season...sick horse barrel race anyone!? When asked what the youth mem-

bers like most about being a part of the varsity team they unanimously say the friendships that you create and the people that you get to meet. The new 2021 Youth President Lan- don Brown remarked “we are all looking

forward to showing this year and to all our fundraising activities” while past president Logan Kendall added “ we’re hoping we get more youth to come out this year and join in the fun!” All the youth members are looking forward to sliding into the reining pen with everyone again

soon! If you know a youth who is interested in join-

ing the team or finding out more, feel free to con- tact any member of the ORHA board.
