YFF & AOTY Profiles Brimming with ideas
Jack Coope’s interest in freight forwarding stemmed from his time at the University of Portsmouth, where he took an international business degree. A finalist in BIFA’s Young Freight Forwarder Award category, he is
already bringing new ideas to the business
methods are being practised: you cannot manage what you do not measure,” he pointed out. Jack observed that those with a long history in
Jack Coope learnt about green transport as part of his degree, writing a dissertation on ‘Sustainability within Global Logistics’. Since joining B&H Worldwide’s graduate scheme in 2018, he has seen sustainability in action, whether in the form of consolidations or the selection of efficient routes. His interest in sustainability ties in with his
belief in the value of technological advancements: he wants to explore how the latter can help to reduce the carbon footprint of freight forwarding. “Data is imperative to ensure sustainable
A fresh point of view
For Eloise Hill, a finalist in BIFA’s Apprentice of the Year Award
category, being new to freight forwarding is by no means a disadvantage
Besides finishing her apprenticeship, Eloise Hill has also completed BIFA’s BTEC Intermediate Award in Customs Export & Import Procedures course – and she is already passing on her knowledge to her colleagues at DHL Global Forwarding in several ways. For example, she said: “I have enjoyed training
other apprentices and want to carry on when we are back in the office [after COVID-19]. I think because I am still quite new to the industry it is

easier for me to train others. Compared with people who have been in freight for 20 years, I have a fresh point of view on things.” Eloise was also instrumental in DHL’s
transition to a new IT system. She explained: “We moved from a very old system to CargoWise, which was a massive change for some people because it was all they had known for 30 years. I was able to learn the new system quickly and help others learn how to use it as
logistics may have been using the same processes for many years, “and sometimes you need a fresh mind to push new ideas and bring change. You can learn from someone who is 60 years old or from someone who is 20.” For example, during a stint in B&H’s Auckland
office he created new SOPs for each employee’s role. He has also worked as an operations coordinator in Los Angeles. On his return to the UK he took over US night operations, controlling B&H’s Miami and Los Angeles offices remotely. Jack has since trained a UK team to provide
remote coverage, and is working on rolling out similar projects globally.

well. Being younger, and not knowing the old system inside out, helped. “There was training with CargoWise, but with
things like that you only really learn by doing.” Which, of course, is why logistics is so well
suited to aprenticeships, Eloise agreed. She added: “People take the time to train you when you are an apprentice. “I would definitely consider doing more
training and mentoring if the opportunity came up,” Eloise continued. “I am also interested in getting into management – but I want to get more experience and knowledge first.”
