UNIT 1 Factors that influence temperature and rainfall

Some places are much hotter or much wetter than others. In this unit you will learn about five factors that influence temperature and rainfall, which cause these differences between places.

Distance from the equator (latitude)

Distance from the equator can be measured in degrees of latitude. The equator is 0º and the poles are 90º north and south.

LET US CHECK ✔ You learnt about latitude in Grade 6.

Effect of latitude on temperature

Temperatures are highest near the equator, and decrease with latitude toward the poles, where it is very cold. You can see these changes on the world map below. Notice the high temperatures in the tropics – between the tropics of Capricorn (23,5°S) and Cancer (23,5°N).
