Activity 5 Apply what you have learnt

Look at the bar graph below. It shows the rainfall for a town in South Africa at latitude 34 °S. 1 Does this place have winter or summer rain? (Remember that winter is in the middle of the year.)

2 Is this what you would expect, considering its latitude? 3 Use the map on page 54 to suggest which place this could be.

4.1 For the place where your school is, use an atlas, the Internet or a local newspaper to find: 4.1.1

the mean monthly temperatures for January and July

4.1.2 the altitude 4.1.3 the latitude 4.1.4

the amount of rain that falls in January and July 4.1.5 the total amount of rain for the year.

4.2 Decide if the temperatures would be higher or lower if the place were: 4.2.1 further north 4.2.2

further south

4.2.3 at a lower altitude 4.2.4

at a higher altitude.

4.3 For the temperatures given in 4.1.1: 4.3.1 calculate the temperature range. 4.3.2 How would this be different if the place were closer to the sea, and if it were further from the sea?

5 Does the place have most of its rain in summer or winter? Which factor affecting temperature explains this?
