Physical education : Physical activities that UNIT 2 promote components of fi tness (1)

2.1 Participation in physical activities that

promote components of fitness Physical fitness is your ability to perform a physical activity. For example, a game of rugby will require you to be strong (strength) and or fast (speed). Strength and speed are components of physical fitness. There are many components of physical fitness. These include: • Muscular strength: The ability to carry out work against resistance or force.

• Speed: The ability to move quickly. • Agility: The ability to change body position or direction quickly.

For this term, you are going to learn to test and improve your speed and agility. These components are important when participating in many games and sports. Let us begin with agility.

How to do agility tests

In Activity 6 on page 16 you will have to do different agility tests. Here are guidelines on how to do each test.

T-drill • Set out four cones as illustrated alongside. • Start at cone A. • On the command, sprint to cone B and touch the base of the cone with your right hand.

• Then turn left and side-step (shuffle) to cone C, and also touch its base, this time with your left hand.

• Then side-step to the right to cone D and touch the base with your right hand.

• Then shuffle back to cone B, touch it with your left hand, and run backwards to cone A.

Quadrant jump test • A quadrant is marked out on the floor, as illustrated alongside. • Mark the starting line and the number of each quadrant. • Stand with both feet together at the starting line. • On the command “go”, jump ahead across the line into the first quadrant, then in sequence successively into quadrants 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, and so on.

• Continue with this pattern as rapidly as possible for 10 seconds. Quadrant jump T-drill Important

Remember to warm up before you start with the exercises. Run in place for 5 minutes while rotating your arms forwards and backwards.
