Increased incentive payments for hiring new apprentices

The UK government has increased its incentive payment to £3,000 for new apprentices of any age who start their employment between 1 April and 30 September 2021. With the under-25s having seen the biggest rise in

unemployment due to the pandemic, the apprenticeship pathway should be seriously considered by employers to add fresh talent to the industry. Carl Hobbis, BIFA executive director, added: “There

are 10 apprenticeship standards in the transport and logistics sector but the International Freight Forwarding Specialist, which BIFA helped develop, is the only one with customs as a mandatory module. “We must all play our part and help protect the future

of the sector. It is vital to continue to recruit apprentices and build capacity to start equipping a new generation with the knowledge and skills to face the challenges

ahead, especially due to EU Exit. “For SMEs, the apprentice programme can cost as

little as £450 per apprentice, and includes a BTEC qualification for the apprentice as well, so it is great value. “We firmly believe that now is the time to drive

apprenticeship opportunities forward around the country.” For more information about apprenticeships visit:
