Location location location!
Interior schemes and ideas for this year will be heavily influenced by what everyone has lived through in 2020: the past year has really highlighted the importance and value of our homes, and how much we need nature in our lives, whether literally or via patterns and colour choice, and space. In terms of colour, we are seeing the return of earth, stone, sea and woodland colours in a huge way and bringing the outside into our homes with plants, botanical wallpaper and fabric prints, and arrangements of foliage. This is something that we brought to the scheme for a new Show Home for Acorn Property Group, located within the Grade II listed local landmark, The Links, at Rest Bay, Porthcawl. The combination of new and old buildings set in a stunning coastal location with fabulous views over the ever-changing sea, rolling landscape and the manicured lawns of the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club provided us with the perfect backdrop for a truly nature inspired scheme. The apartment we worked on is generously proportioned with high ceilings and huge windows, and cried out for simple but elegant window treatments which were all hand made at the Clayton & Company studio in Somerset. We are a bespoke interior design service who work with private clients, developers and hoteliers nationwide, working closely with our sister company Jane Clayton, a household name, offering a huge range of fabrics, wallpapers, headboards and window treatments. In the enormous, light-filled open plan living area we decided to buck the trend of typical coastal décor, using a palette of greys and neutrals instead, with natural textures in woven baskets, styling and the wooden floors, but with a nod to the nautical in the striped cushions:
the
whole scheme perfectly reflects the colour palette of the coastline at this location, bringing the outside, in The natural theme is carried through all the rooms and in the main bedroom the greys are combined with warm neutrals and luxurious textures of silks, velvet and faux fur, creating a vibrant and tactile environment that is also calm and soothing: beaches are, generally speaking, relaxing, tactile locations: we have all sat on a beach and played with the sand or pebbles in our hands,

or picked up drift wood. The large bay window, with spectacular views, is framed by elegant, plain full-length curtains to accentuate the glamour of the room.
In
the second and third bedrooms we have used cosy, rich creams accented with darker greys, grey blues and greens and chunky textured throws for a cosy and comfortable feel Chloe Simpson, who led the design team at Clayton & Company on this project, has cleverly used mirrors to reflect views and has carefully chosen artwork and accessories that complement the overall design. The three bathrooms feature contemporary white fittings and deep glossy grey metro tiles, named for their initial use on metro and underground railways and popular in Victorian times, which connect to the history of the location. Metro tiles come in a variety of sizes and finishes, and even wider range of colours, making them infinitely variable, Matt, gloss, high gloss, bevelled edge, straight edge, rustic edge, these versatile tiles can be used to create an exceptionally wide range of moods. By altering the size, finish, colour and pattern you can quickly and simply set a tone that can veer towards more period and traditional schemes, or contemporary, or industrial. We have used a slightly longer tile, with rustic edge and uneven surface to connect to the period architecture of the original building, in a classic brick pattern with neutral grout, while using contemporary white bathroom fittings to add an air of modernity. You can add another dimension by using a coloured grout, which will accentuate the pattern more.
We are finding amongst all our clients, private and corporate, that there is a greater desire for comfort, calm and space at this time, which naturally appeals to a wide range of homeowners too. As we have all spent increased amounts of time at home over the past year this has also encouraged people to consider their home décor and while people are seeking a sense space and calm, there is also a desire for colour. Completely neutral schemes that have focused on creating a sense of space are finding less favour as the need for colour in our lives, and specifically colours that are found in nature, is acknowledged.
The Show Home at The Links is a good example of the calm, yet colourful, interior schemes that we are seeing increased demand for: the wide range of subtle natural shades that are available in many regular paint ranges make it easy for people to avoid plain old white or contract magnolia, while keeping interiors bright.
