Sixty new Crisis Supporter trainees this year, because of your kindness
When a caller dials 13 11 14, the voice they hear could save their life. It is your generosity that makes this possible – in fact, Lifeline Adelaide has just welcomed 60 new trainees because of your compassion.
One of the busiest centres in Australia, Lifeline Adelaide answers more than 40,000 calls and online chats each year from South Australians experiencing crisis. Tragically, many of these people are thinking about taking their lives. Every one of these calls is answered by a highly trained Lifeline Crisis Supporter, whose training is funded through kind donations from supporters like you.
What makes these Crisis Supporters even more special is that they are also volunteers; kind-hearted, dedicated people like you who care deeply about preventing suicide, supporting people in crisis, and promoting good mental health and emotional wellbeing. It takes a team of more than 200 dedicated volunteers to ensure that we are available to support people in crisis 365 days a year.
The expansion in the Crisis Supporter team in recent months has been incredibly positive. In addition to the 60 new trainees who are now answering calls under supervision, another 40 new trainees have volunteered to come on
board. Aspiring volunteers attend an information session to find out more about the recruitment and training process to make an informed decision before taking on the role.
Crisis Supporter Training is specialised and demanding – and comes at a significant cost. This is why your commitment is so important.
To become an accredited Crisis Supporter, trainees must complete specialist Crisis Supporter Workplace Training (CSWT) including a six- week training course, online learning modules, 92 hours on Lifeline phones, and regular supervision and call coaching. This training costs our organisation $2900 per person, including a personal contribution of $580 from each new volunteer.
For close to 60 years, Lifeline Adelaide has relied on volunteers to provide this essential crisis support service to the community. With the dedication of generous donors like you to fund training, it is comforting to know that together, we are helping South Australians in crisis every hour, every day. On behalf of every person who reaches out to Lifeline for help – thank you.
‘Sometimes someone will tell you, “You’ve really helped me tonight” or “Lifeline has saved my life.”’
‘ Volunteering is so rewarding, particularly when you’ve helped
someone stay safe.’ - Maggie, Crisis Support Worker
Well done to SA’s
Volunteer of the Year! Congratulations to Ann Taylor, recently awarded Lifeline Volunteer of the Year for South Australia. Ann has volunteered with the service for seven years and is one of the service’s highly regarded Crisis Supporters.
As well as feeling honoured to receive the accolade, Ann says that it’s the purpose of the service that keep her motivated.
‘I know first-hand how critical Lifeline is to so many people,’ she says. ‘I’m so pleased to receive this award, but knowing I’m helping people in crisis is what I find most rewarding.’
