Lifeline

Adelaide will be there to listen and offer hope.

Jill and her family at Christmas

Last Christmas, we shared a story that struck a deep chord with supporters like you; a story about love and loss, but also hope. Now, thanks to your generous response to our appeal, Lifeline will answer more calls and save more lives this year.

‘I remember thinking, ‘Our family won’t survive this. I don’t even know if I’ll survive it,’ she said.

Jill bravely told the story of her family’s immense loss, so that more people like her Dad are able to reach out to Lifeline when they feel desperate and alone.

After a year that saw more people call Lifeline than ever before, your support is absolutely crucial. At its peak, demand for Lifeline services grew by 24% in 2020 – a heartbreaking statistic.

Your support for Lifeline Adelaide is life-changing and life-saving. It means people like Tom do not have to face their darkest moments alone. Offering crisis support and suicide prevention services by phone, text and online, we hope that people like Tom will call 13 11 14 instead.

Jill lost her beloved father, Tom, to suicide in 2013. Tom had suffered depression most of his life and relied on medication to help manage his mood.

When her loving Dad didn’t call on her birthday in 2013, Jill knew something was very wrong. In the chaotic hours and days that followed, Jill and her family learned that Tom had died by suicide.

Since her dad’s passing, every year has been full of special events and Jill’s heartache continues. Tom has missed weddings, unforgettable family moments – and the birth of Jill’s little girl.

‘I think about it every single day. I wish Dad had called Lifeline during the really dark days. I wish I could say, “please don’t leave us, we love you.”

‘ Every death by suicide is one too many. That’s why I want to raise the profile of Lifeline and raise awareness of suicide.’

Jill was incredibly moved to learn how much Tom’s story had touched you, and that it had helped raise the funds Lifeline urgently needs to continue to answer every call.

‘As a family we hope we can compel more people to learn about suicide prevention. Lifeline is so important to me,’ she says.

Your generosity means Lifeline can continue to be there to connect, listen and care, to keep someone safe, and save lives. Jill wanted me to share this special message with you:

‘I am so grateful for your generosity and commitment to supporting Lifeline. Your gift is literally life-saving and will help this organisation to continue their important work. After a year that’s brought new and unparalleled challenges, our continued support of Lifeline is more critical than ever.’
