JEAN GENIE-US FINDING YOUR PERFECT PAIR

As lockdown restrictions begin to be eased, we are all thinking of overhauling our wardrobes to face the outside world once more. We’ve been cocooned in our homes, working from home and not seeing anyone and perhaps our sense of fashion has become a little lax. Slouchy leggings might be ok for a night in with Netflix and your favourite takeaway but they just aren’t going to cut the mustard when we start socialising again.

One of the fashion staples in every woman’s wardrobe has to be a favourite pair of jeans – but how do you find that perfect fit?

John Lewis has been running a series of fashion webinairs during lockdown to keep in touch with their customers and this month three of their personal stylists, working with denim experts Levi’s, turned their attention to finding the right pair of denim to fit your shape and size.

Levi’s have a 160-year-old history of producing clothes in denim, but surprisingly women only really started wearing trousers, and jeans, in the 1930s.

Now most women have several pairs, with cuts and colours to suit all occasions – dress them up with heels and a silky top for smarter lunch dates or stay casual with trainers and sweaters for a trip to the shops.

The stylists, all with very different body types and heights, described how finding the right fit can be a little bit of trial and error, especially without professional help.

The first thing is to establish your body shape (not just whether you’ve gained a few pounds over lockdown!). If you are high or low waisted, apple or pear shaped, more curvy around the bottom, more straight up and down, all of these are deciding factors when choosing your jeans.

A high waisted pair of jeans can really smooth out any lumps and bumps form the stomach and bottom area whilst helping to elongate the legs. High waisted and wide legged really flatters and teamed with a blouse can be a fun, retro look – think Dominique in The Serpent. Skinny jeans have been a fashion staple for some time now and show no signs of going away. With a gentle stretch in the denim these can cling in all of the right places and are super comfy. These can be a good choice for everyone, dressed differently according to body shape. For a more casual look, the boyfriend fit can also work well.

Stylist Olivia said: “Lots of us are stuck in a style rut, wearing the same thing all of the time – especially this year. “We can help shoppers out of their comfort zone. “I think all stylists will tell you that they love that moment when a customer gets a spark in their eye when they try something new and love it and yet often hadn’t even wanted to try it on.”

And Victoria added: “Not all styles suit everyone but we are trained in proportional dressing so can help you pick the perfect fit for you and show you how to dress it. “What I would say though is to disregard age. We work on being style conscious not fashion conscious and if a style works for you, then go with it.”

Online personal styling appointments are currently available from John Lewis, where stylists can show you new fashion and work with items in your own wardrobes. Post lockdown, a range of tailored in-store appointments are offered, including jeans, holiday or work wear, special occasion outfits and a general wardrobe refresh.

Top tips:

Find the best fit for your tummy, bum and waist and don’t worry about the length – that’s always the easiest thing to fix.

Think about your figure and what you want to highlight – small waist, long legs, shapely bottom – and focus on that. When buying jeans, buy the tightest pair that fits (without cutting of your circulation) as they will mould to your figure. Buy too big and they will soon look baggy and shapeless.

Don’t be scared to tuck in your tops. You might think this highlights your tummy but often the opposite is true. If you’re not convinced, just tuck something in on one side or choose a top with shaped bottom. Rolling your sleeves up can also create an illusion of a waistline.

Lessen the pool when you shop – if you know what basic style suits you, just try those on and the whole experience will be less disheartening.

Try to go into the changing with a positive attitude and not see it as a chore. Don’t get upset if the first pair aren’t right. Make a note of the jeans you’ve tried and liked – you’ll soon get to know which to go for.
