News Roundup Port

Authority saw vehicle and container volumes rebound during

quarter of

the port’s new fiscal year, which began on Oct. 1. Strong demand for consumer goods and vehicles attributed to the port’s solid first-quarter results. Global recovery in the

automobile manufacturing industry is driving growth for the port’s vehicle volumes, which grew 7% year-over-year in the first quarter. More than 185,513 vehicles have moved through JAXPORT so far in FY21, marking the second-

busiest quarter for vehicles in the port’s history. JAXPORT’s container

volumes are also rebounding, up 5% year-to-date in FY21. Nearly 353,400 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs, the industry standard for measuring containers) moved through JAXPORT during the first quarter of FY21, making it also one of the port’s busiest first quarters on record for container volumes. “We strive to be a resource shippers as they adapt

for

to supply chain challenges related to the pandemic,” said JAXPORT CEO Eric Green. “As

consumer trends continue to shift, and ecommerce grows, efficiency becomes increasingly important. The investments we are making in our facilities ensure we can maximize all of the efficiencies Jacksonville offers, including our fast access to the growing Southeast consumer market.” A number of JAXPORT’s

major growth projects will be nearing completion in 2021. Contractors for the U.S.

Carrier Transicold’s TripLINK

platform adds enhanced shipboard, global monitoring capabilities

Carrier Transicold’s TripLINK™ platform for refrigerated container monitoring has been enhanced with capabilities to integrate with vessel- based wireless networks for improved shipboard cargo visibility and operations efficiency. “Our latest software update

significantly expands the current suite of monitoring and control capabilities of the TripLINK platform,” said Willy Yeo, director of marketing, Global Container Refrigeration, Carrier Transicold.

With TripLINK, refrigeration

unit performance monitoring can be enhanced through live analytics, a beta feature for providing refrigeration unit health assessments in real time. TripLINK will continue to be enhanced with Carrier’s Lynx digital platform. Unique to Carrier

Transicold’s platform, refrigeration unit health assessments help to identify potential service needs in advance so they can be addressed at the fleet’s convenience. As part of the live analytics suite, a new tool indicates if a refrigeration

unit’s power source is within the ISO-specified range – an out-of-range power supply could result in a faulty performance of the refrigeration system. “By integrating with on-

vessel wireless networks from leading providers, such as Wireless

Maritime

Services (WMS) and Net Feasa Ltd., the TripLINK platform gives ship personnel insights into their TripLINK- equipped refrigerated containers onboard, including information about temperature, refrigeration unit operation and the container’s precise location on the vessel,” Yeo said. “For vessels with satellite communications capability, TripLINK data can now also be transmitted back to a fleet’s landside monitoring station while refrigerated containers are out at sea beyond the range of cellular service.

This means more

frequent updates about cargo and location around the globe, thereby giving asset operators and owners alike greater ease of mind, transparency and control over their refrigerated containers.” Enabling integration

EVA Air has signed a new three-year cargo handling contract with Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) in Seattle, extending the two companies’ more than 15 years of partnership in North America. The agreement sees WFS take responsibility for

handling all cargo onboard the Taiwanese airline’s daily Boeing 777 passenger flights connecting Taipei and Seattle- Tacoma International Airport. WFS already holds contracts with EVA Air at the airport for below-wing ramp handling services for its passenger operations as well as ramp and

cargo handling of the airline’s freighter flights. Overall, WFS expects to

handle some 12 million kilos of air cargo annually for EVA Air in Seattle. The new contract expands

shipping channel to 47 feet from its current depth of 40 feet. Completion through Blount Island is anticipated in 2022, three years ahead of its original schedule. The deepening project construction

includes

of a new vessel turning basin to allow larger ships to turn at Blount Island berths. In addition, more than $100 million in berth enhancements to allow Blount Island to simultaneously accommodate two post- Panamax ships will be completed around the same time as the deepening project.

TripLINK vessel software. The software gives operators a set of control protocols and

visibility through the

TripLINK dashboard, which shows summary information about refrigerated containers. Additionally, the TripLINK vessel application enables ship crew to be notified of refrigeration unit alarms via handheld devices, if provided as part of the vessel’s wireless service. Another

labor-saving

upgrade introduced with the latest software update is the ability to simultaneously send identical refrigeration unit commands, such as temperature setpoints, to multiple containers rather than one at a time. This not only minimizes operational expenses but improves the overall

efficiency managers.
