Medicine Hat G&CC in super shape for 2020

It was going to be an exceptionally banner year around the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club this summer, with the cherry on top being the Alberta men’s amateur golf championship in July.

Now that COVID-19 has scuttled that — along with most tournaments of major consequence — general manager Cam Jacques and his staff are doing what they can to make the 2020 season memorable nonetheless.

“With all large-scale tournaments like the Victoria Day Classic, charity tournaments and the Alberta men’s amateur being cancelled there is lots of opportunity for the local golfer to access our facility and play lots of golf this year,” said Jacques.

Jacques said the tree-lined course situated north of the South Saskatchewan River wintered well and “is in great condition.”

“The greens are quick and smooth,” he said.

The coronavirus delayed the start of all golf in Alberta this spring, but Jacques said the clubhouse and pro shop, along with the driving range and

practice facilities, are now open.

“Our entire facility is COVID-19 friendly and many procedures and protocols are in place to ensure the safety of all of our golfers and staff ,” said Jacques.

Plenty of green fee specials are available for golfers eager to play the prestigious layout. For instance, you can play Mondays for $45 for 18 holes ($60 with cart) and the same rate for weekends after 1 p.m.

Jacques said the club’s back patio “with the best view in the city” overlooking the river valley is also open. “Stop by for some refreshments,” he said.

Changes, due to the virus, have been made to the club’s Wednesday men’s league. It was originally ‘members-only’ but is now open to all male golfers, using a ‘drop-in’ format. “It is a new fun format every Wednesday,” said Jacques. More details are available by phoning the pro shop.

Now that business restrictions have been relaxed across the province, the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club’s lounge, restaurant and snack shack are open.

ASK US ABOUT OUR DUAL MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM

MEDICINE HAT CONNAUGHT GOLF & CC

& GOLF CLUB GOLF PRIVILEGES AT BOTH COURSES!

Jacques said the dual membership arrangement with Connaught is working well and is now in its sixth year. For an additional $325, golfers receive full playing privileges at the other club. Cart leases or driving range passes are good at both clubs. More than 200 members from both clubs take advantage of the dual membership.

A new reciprocal arrangement with Desert Blume has also been established. Members at one club can play at the other for $50, cart included, just by showing proof of membership.

Greens superintendent Mark Begin is back for his 10th season at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club. “He has really raised the level of our day-to- day playing conditions over the last few years,” said Jacques. The new ninth- and 10th-hole greens complexes “have really improved those two holes and the golfers just love them.”
