Riverview in Redcliff a golfer’s treat

MEDICINE HAT NEWS

Riverview Golf Club in Redcliff is truly a diamond in the rough. The greens are in excellent shape, the fairways and tee boxes are outstanding. The board of directors, volunteers, staff and management have worked very hard and the course is in great shape from all aspects.

The course provides its members and guests with great conditions, friendly atmosphere, outstanding service, and breath-taking views of the South Saskatchewan River Valley.

Membership rates top out at only $1,325 and the green-fee rate of only $46 to play 18 beautiful holes any day of the week is a deal diffi cult to beat.

Overlooking the South Saskatchewan River, golfers occasionally hit over the steep coulee ridges.

Though just 169 yards from the furthest tees, the par-3 16th is both a highlight for its view and a potential lowlight if you can’t judge the wind coming from the coulee.

“There are a few holes that sneak up on you real fast when the wind’s blowing — No. 8, No. 16, and No. 17 specifi cally,” said general manager Todd Read.

“I’ve been a scratch golfer for 28 years and I love it. Is it the toughest golf course in the area?

Probably not. But is it the easiest one to score on? No way.”

At 6,644 yards from the tips, the par 71 layout doesn’t seem intimidating. But the short par 4 number 17th has water on one side and the coulee on the other, and both have gobbled up balls from many golfers over the years.

Read was a dedicated member of the club before taking over as GM and has seen plenty of exciting changes over the past year. Once the restrictions from the pandemic are lifted, “we will run our leagues and events,” said Read. “The junior program went from about a dozen young athletes to a total of 53 last season. Our men’s league will run all day on Wednesdays next year in addition to the traditional 6 p.m. shotgun, in order to accommodate more golfers who don’t want to stay out as late.

Read says he is thrilled to have the team of Kelli and Dylan Ireland back again to run the clubhouse restaurant, with their previous experience as owners of the former District Bar and Grill a hint of what to expect. This is not your run-of-the-mill golf course food experience, said Read.

“Their service is the best, the food quality is amazing, so all our members and tournament players get excellent food,” said Read. “There’s a lot of people who just come out for breakfast.”

Whatever your reason, this is a good year to revisit Riverview. The sun is clearly shining on it again.
