involved in a spirited game of basketball. It abruptly ends when Vhie accidently elbows Sunshine who takes it as a personal insult and peevishly withdraws from the game. But before she does, she looks back and angrily scowls at her mother.
he makes phone calls and also texts. He becomes increasingly frustrated.
7.30 AM I have no option but to hear a now fully recovered Sunshine in the shower singing her latest favorite song. She has a good, if imperfect, singing voice. The joy inside her overcomes any singing imperfections resulting in a pleasant sound. As always, I’m drawn to her unbounded happiness, her infinite zest for life. This young lady has the capacity to achieve much. Hopefully, it will be in service to others rather than chasing illusory gold. 8 AM Sunshine has already teamed up via zoom with her teacher Eileen. Sunshine very much respects Eileen. She always wants to impress her academically. Sunshine already knows from me that it’s unacceptable for her not to always be on the honor roll and also be the top student in her class, or, at worst, be in the top three. 8.30 AM Vhie checks her always overflowing bag to make sure she’s’ forgotten nothing. She invariably does. More hugs, kisses and I love you too’s, then she powers up her motor bike and heads to her beauty salon up in Valencia. Because of my lifetime depth of experience creating and running small businesses, I strongly recommended against her last September starting a new business during the height of the current pandemic. Ignoring my wisdom, she went ahead and has been profitable from day one. 9.00 AM I’m about to
Twenty minutes later I’m about to leave when, with arms rotating like a windmill, a lovely Pinay makes her dramatic entrance. This scene is, no doubt, acted out every day throughout the Philippines between Pinays and usually aging foreigners. This lovely girl rushes over and embraces him with more than sufficient warmth to melt an igloo. She’s happier to meet him that he presently knows. Warm smiles radiate from her lovely face that’s a combination of angel and simmering sensuality. S he
PROFUSELY for being “a little late.” Apparently, the traffic was horrible, really HORRIBLE! It actually wasn’t. Today is unusually quiet in Dumaguete. Her expression of regret is so heartfelt you’d think her entire family had been killed after driving off a cliff. The naive foreigner, blinded by her sensual beauty and apparent innocence, would have forgiven her if she’d whispered into his ear that she’d heavily insured her entire family then arranged for the brakes to fail.

heavily on her. But soon she moves on to another source of laughter the sounds of which ring delightfully throughout our house. How silent and empty it will be when she leaves to fulfil her destiny. 7 PM Dinner is ready. It’s
been cooked by Angie who is our live-in helper. As usual, it’s soup. I wonder how much longer I’ll be able to look at, let alone eat, dead fish heads while their accusing eyes glare up at me.
leave for the office. I go into Sunshine’s room and give kiss her goodbye. “Oh Daddy, your hair’s a mess. Sit down over there.” She points to her bed. Then she comes over, takes off my glasses, and spends the next five minutes intently focused on the challenging task of redeeming my hair while I unsuccessfully try to be patient. Eventually she purrs “It’s good now.” She’s impressed by her work. Regardless of age, it seems women are instinctively nurturing and maternal. 9.30 AM I drive along Rizal
Boulevard and am, as always, excited by the waves splashing against the boulevard walls. Siquijor simmers brightly in the distance. The winds are strong, the waves choppy. I wonder if a typhoon is coming. 10 AM-4.00 PM I meet with
A warm hug with bodies touching closely relieves the tension. The game begins. I can’t help watching them interact for a few minutes before leaving. Shakespeare suggested that life has seven stages. I’ve calculated a similar number for Expat- Pinay relationships. This couple are at stage two. I, perhaps vulgarly, call it the sniff test. That’s when they’re getting to know each other, each thinking how adorable and amusing the other is. She coquettishly puts her head to one side with her intertwined hands delicately poised under her chin. He sits erect pretending to be engrossed in every word she’s saying but he’s actually thinking about a suitable hotel to check into. At stage two, every interaction is unblemished perfection. Neither are willing or even capable of seeing any flaws in each other. 5 PM I head up to Valencia and check in on Vhie. She’s busy and expects to be home late. Naspri is next. It’s there I phone calls and send texts, then business and personal emails.
read another chapter from a delightful book we both enjoy. Horrid Henry’s House of Horrors has us in fits of unrestrained laugher. 8.15 PM I’m fortunate to thoroughly really enjoy reading. I always have. High quality writing is, for me, close to a spiritual experience. I read one book every week. Since childhood, it’s been an escape for me and especially now in these challenging times. Being an author myself, I feel uncomfortable about having paid only 120 pesos for a superbly written book from an American author I’d never heard of. I feel no consolation knowing books of mine published only three years ago are either gathering dust on bookshelves around the world or being purchased for less than the equivalent of 120 pesos I paid. 10. PM I close the book. Waiting for sleep to arrive, I evaluate my day. How did I behave to others? Do I need to apologize to anyone for being rude? Was I honest in my business dealings? Would they benefit everybody involved? Did anything unusual happen about which I need to reflect? This day has been fruitful and, in some ways, unique. Since I’m now in my 70’s, while I don’t dwell obsessively on mortality, I recognize that someday, any day, could be, will be, my final one. That reality motivates me to squeeze the most out of the unknown time that’s left to me.

It’s gratifying work especially because the ex- pays almost always appreciate having a resource they can trust in terms of competence and integriey. 4.15 PM I’m at Sans Rival outside Robinsons mall. As always, I’m amused when observing foreigners on the prowl. I’m watching a clearly nervous, decent looking, mid 30s foreigner who’s repeatedly looking around. I assume he’s wondering where the heck his date is. He must be new to Dumaguete because he’s clearly unfamiliar with the Pinay sense of timing. If they arrive an hour late, they consider themselves to be a half hour early. Increasing my amusement, every few minutes
6 PM “It must b e wonderful to be Sunshine.” I suggest to her. “Oh, it is!” She enthusiastically responds while vigorously nodding her head causing her long hair to dance around her beautiful smiling face. Barely managing to suppress my urge to burst into laughter I ask her. “Why is that? “Well, my mommy and daddy love me so much.” A brief pause, then “And when Daddy’s sick, I mind him. I like that.” Responding in the third person I say “But your Daddy is rarely, if ever, sick.” “True but he was, you were, over the past few days.” The concerned medical practitioner continues “And how are you feeling today?” this said in a calm, professional tone. I half expected a thermometer to magically appear in Dr. Sunshine’s hand.
“And you can do everything because you are so bright and talented.” “True, but I can’t wiggle both my ears at the same time the way you do.” Sigh. This shortcoming weighs

For now, the E-Nutribun is available on a “per order” basis from Saints Baked Delights which was granted the sole license to produce E-Nutribun in Negros Oriental after passing the standards set by the DOST-FNRI for local firms who would like to avail of the technology. “Last December, we were able to soft launch sa Negros Oriental, Siquijor, and Cebu kay that time wala pa man adopter sa Cebu so we catered pati sa Cebu (there was no adopter in Cebu during that time),” said Jason Ian Sy, owner of Saints Baked Delights and the E-Nutribun technology adopter in Negros Oriental. Bumanglag’s Clinic at Brgy. 7, Tanjay City, out of wedlock, by her parents LILIA ANDEZA MAHILUM and NILO ZERNA BAO, which fact of birth was registered on Oct. 9, 1995 before the office of Respondent Civil Registrar of Tanjay City under Civil Registry No. 95-1078. Copy of the Certificate of Live Birth of Petitioner is hereto attached as Annex “A”;
8. On Feb. 27, 1999, Petitioner’s parents, Nilo Z. Bao and Lilia A. Mahilum, without any legal impediment, got married at the Parish of St. James the Greater in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, and because of the subsequent marriage of Petitioner’s parents, Petitioner has acquired the status of a legitimate child by operation of law. The marriage certificate of Petitioner’s parents is hereby attached, and made an integral part of this Petition as Annex “B”; 9. That in Petitioner’s Certificate of Live Birth with Registry No. 95-1078, her mother’s age was erroneously written as “17 years old” instead of “19 years old”, her mother being born on Nov. 14, 1975. A copy of Petitioner’s mother’s Certificate of Live Birth is attached as Annex “C”; 10. That the error in the Certificate of Live Birth of Petitioner, with Registry No. 95-1078 remains unprocessed and uncorrected; 11. The correction of the above-mentioned entry of the Certificate of Live Birth of Petitioner would put in order Petitioner’s birth records, and eventually, facilitate and expedite Petitioner’s intention to correct erroneous entries in her Certificate of Live Birth; 12. Under Sec. 1, Rule 108 of the Rules of Court, “any person interested in any act, event, order or decree concerning the civil status of persons which has been recorded in the civil register, may file a verified petition for the cancellation or correction of any entry relating thereto, with the Court of First Instance [now Regional Trial Court] of the province where the corresponding civil registry is located.” 13. Likewise, Sec. 2 of the same Rule provides that “upon good and valid grounds, the following entries in the civil register may be cancelled or corrected: (a) births;.. x xx.”
PRAYER
Wherefore premises considered, it is most respectfully prayed to this Honorable Court that an Order be issued directing herein Respondent Civil Registrar to cancel and correct the age of Petitioner’s mother from 17 years old to 19 years old in the Petitioner’s Certificate of Live Birth. Other reliefs just and equitable are likewise prayed for. Respectfully submitted. Tanjay City. January 18, 2021.
